Title: G40T from Hungary
Post by: Stirlitz on January 16, 2014, 03:35:35 pm
I already have some posts, but thought to make a photo post for my '91 G40.

As you see from the subject I'm living in Hungary and my G40 is one of the less than 10 G40s in the country.

Last year I started a blog about the day-to-day life with the G40 as I really didn't find any good resources about the G when it's a daily commuter.

Polo G40: Every day's a G-day (http://polog40eng.wordpress.com/)

I'll pick up the story shortly where I left, as lot of things happened since.

My G-lader gave up, so had some advices here in the forum, and it's just being converted to "K03-charged".

This costs me the almost the original price of the car, so it's gonna happen in a couple of stages. First the turbo conversion, deep breath, than exhaust as I had it made in the summer, but won't be enough for the turbo, deep breath than the brakes. The camshaft might upgraded, if I won't like it with the stock G40 camshaft.

I already have made several minor repairs, and did the Golf Mk1 fender upgrade for the front (have the rear arches also, but will be made laaater...  :-\).

That's for a start. :)

Some pictures

Bought the car with ugly 13" steels and 165/70 winter tires...

...so as springtime came I went for a set of 14" Snowflakes with 185/60s as I really did not like the original small wheel size.
I think it looks much better than with the original size.

It's winter, so the Snowflakes are gone and have 15" G60 steels with 175/55 winter tires.

I really like the Snowflakes, but the G60 wheels are just sooooo bitchin' on the the car. I was a little afraid if the 15s would dwarf the car... but the size is just perfect. I just can't wipe the smile off my face driving the car thinking how nice wheels I have.  8) ;D

... ... ... Ok, smiles are gone. The engine is being converted... ... will get back later with the result. ;)

Well, first the sad news... the turbo project is delayed for about a month, the little G is in non-charged mode 'til that time. :-[

The good: Finally, the first real snow in Hungary!  ;)

I think I was the only person on the road who went out for a spin and to have fun in the deep snow. We got about 5inches of that. :)

I took couple of shots... was great fun.

I always have to note every time I look at the pics, that I really love the G60 wheels with the bit oversized tires on it.

Great shots, how does it drive with no G-Lader?

Just take the belt off and it will still run just no boost or alternator so the battery will die if you don't put std belt on from a polo

A lot slower :)
I have a short belt on and a Peugeot 106 air filter... The prev owner had an unknown chip installed and messed with the timing and I really made no adjustments for the uncharged mode.
It's surprisingly torquey and got no problems in city traffic. Out of city... well, it's okay to 50-60mph, but does take ages to get above. I've got 55mm exhaust system that is ( I think ) too large for the 1.3liter in naturally aspirated mode, so it's okay, but I didn't buy a G40 to use it naturally aspirated.
Will check the timing this week...

The mileage is great. Just did a 250mile trip doing 50-75mph (mostly 65mph) and I got ~53mpg (British gallon)... but I want my charged G40 back!  ;)
