Title: High RPM
Post by: physicsfool on June 05, 2013, 05:35:49 PM
Evening all,

So I my daily commute is 20 miles of A roads. Over the past few weeks I have been a tad concerned about my RPM.
60mph usual cruising speed (pikey student) 3250rpm
65mph - 3600rpm
70mph - 3850-4000 rpm

Is there anyway of checking the gearbox short of taking it to pieces?

Cheers

G40's rev high at cruising speeds but that is a little excessive
its stamped on the box under the thermostat housing, it will be covered in gundge and corroded, its on a little flat, get some emery cloth and start rubbing, took ages to find mine as there was no reminisence of it, is a pain to see. A genuine g box will have atv written on it

3000 rpm for 60mph in 5th should be the order of the day for the ATV. Look on the bright side though, your acceleration will be better.

If I remember correctly the G40 box is something like 21mph/1000rpm in 5th. I think the G40 had the longest gearing of any of the MK3s. The figures that you give work out to just over 18mph/1000rpm so it does sound like you have a replacement box from another model Polo.

Yeah she is a rapid little motor, put the higher revs down to it being a 1.3.
But still average 40mpg so cannot complain

im at about 85mph (135-140kmh) for 4000 revs. perhaps a GT gearbox? acceleration will be better on the other hand.

Yeah thats what i thought. looked underneath the car and found this number 085 301 107 A ALG 1. which appears to correspond to a g40 box

On a slightly related topic, the plug that is positioned underneath the thermostat housing appears to have not existed on my gearbox for quite some time.

This worries me as pretty much above it the coolant was leaking out of the body to engine block seal. will it be enough to source a new bung and change the gearbox oil?

That's not the gearbox code. It's stamped on the top of the bell housing underneath the thermostat housing. Maybe your coolant leak will've cleaned this area up a bit!
