Title: leaking headgasket
Post by: Jacque on May 22, 2013, 04:27:12 PM
Hi,

Im having "trouble" with my G's headgasket... it keeps on leaking.

when i bought my G 2,5 years ago, the engine was dry, but few weeks later the head started to leak... (not badly but still didnt like the view. so replaced it, stopped the leaking for +- 2000 miles and it started al over again, replaced it again after some time, wich stopped the leaking, and now its leaking again for some time. what could it cause to start leaking? in total i did +- 10K miles since i got the car (and no abuse). the engine got 172000km ~ 110000 miles and is running a 130-140hp chip. execpt chip & pulley everything else is original.

The gasket itself seems OK, it is the one with metal in it so its not a regular polo gasket.

what could cause it to leak so frequently? high engine temp? (got no oil gauge) my watertemp tends to go to 100° on idle and in heavy traffic... i got 75-80° when driving

any ideas?

thnx, Thomas

did you skim your head before replacing the gasket? and use new head bolts?

just cleaned it up a bit with an old tshirt, no new head bolts... could that be the problem?

I m not really a mechanic, more an enthousiast :) a friend of mine told it could be the bolts aswel, as there are only 3 it doesnt close as good as 8 bolts on G60. although its kinda BS, because i dont see many others leak

soo...new bolts & gasket i suposse? or is the gasket itself not damaged by being pressed on? (i wish probably  ::) after 3 gaskets i m kinda fed up on buying new ones :p)

Ah you mean the rocker cover gasket not head gasket. How tight did you do them? I think theyre supposed to be 10nm only.

Use  a g40 specific cam cover  gasket.  New rubber bungs under the bolts and a smear of blue gasket sealant.

ok sry indeed cover gasket, sorry for the mix up!

i used the G40 specific one  (the one with metal in it)

could it be leaking from tightening the cover to much?
