Now that ive finally got a g40 (converted gt) i thought i would introduce myself......hello.
I went and looked at it last night. After a 4.5 hour train ride i arrived in the pouring rain. Had a good look around, im not new to mk3 polos but i am to G40s. It all sounded good no rattles from charger and wasnt that loud either. So i took it for a test drive. Walking away from a G40 after driving it knowing you have cash in your pocket is just impossible so i parted with £950 and drove 160miles home with a beaming smile on my face....know i understand 'G smiles'
Its a 1991 gt with g40 conversion no g40 gearbox its on a CEG box. Has jabba sport induction cone and a 4-2-1 manifold thats been welded by a very drunk ogre so it blows more than a hooker. No paper work really just a folder of mot certificates. By word of mouth the engine had a rebuild 15k ago when it was converted and is around the same mileage as the car 80k.
I bought it with the intention of swapping the engine into my current gt as the shell is in better condition rust wise but the G is certainly fixable. I will make an decision within a week when my temp cover runs out.
Mitch.
P.s if sam is on here (previous owner), thanks
welcome to the forum! Did you pay £950 for the whole car? That's very cheap!
Welcome and Wow! What a Bargain :D
Yeah thats a bit of a bargain even with the issues. Get some pictures up. We all like to see pictures on here. :-)
Yep 950 entire car tax ends this month mot til jan. Even has leccy windows that work with proper polo switch. I think with the lack of paperwork its a sensible price, good but sensible. If it turns out the charger is boned i have budgeted For a rebuild.
Pics to come soon, have to scare the hell out of my brother and parents first. Though mum does drive a tf300 mr2 ( btw VERY nice cars)
Pete g40 is the man to talk to for charger rebuild parts, does a complete rebuild kit for a good price, beats paying jabba silly money. And hes put a great step by step rebuild guide in the supercharger f&q
I wouldn't feel confident rebuilding my own charger. I'm not your average Muppet with a Birmingham spanner but I'm no master mechanic.
Nice to hear another happy G owner! Welcome mate . Service the charger for peace of mind through Pete, quality servicing garunteed.
Yeah, wouldnt use jabba as they dont replace the outlet bearing as they are "hard to get out" and expensive, not good for £500 odd
good place here :) lots of helpful people and good traders making hard to find parts decently priced and more availible :)
get some pics up :) G pics are always better
I don't think enough oil is getting to the charger, at low rpms there's a horrible noise. I think I will get it serviced but don't feel confident to do it myself, even after reading the how to. So who knows where I can send it to get refurbed well and not stung to bad for cash.
I'm going to test oil flow first. I think the banjo bolt for oil feed may be blocked and it needs spray in it because of boost return mod. What should I use, I have silicone spray grease is that ok or does it need to be ptfe grease?
Can check the oil flow, take the oil feed off the charger and place it in a bowl, unplug the hall sender and take the charger belts off
crank the engine over and see how much oil comes out. Not sure if this is the correct way, but i did it on mine to check
yeah rebuilding a charger is a bit daunting but petes guide makes more sense when you look inside you charger for yourself
you could always whip the charger off and open it to see the genral condition. It isnt difficult
as for a place to rebuild it, i dont really know where to
suggest, i didnt trust anyone (other than pete) to rebuild my charger as most places only replace what is visibly worn, i wanted everything done, so am doing it myself for peace of mind
someone else on here might be able to point you in the right direction where to get it rebuilt
i would only use the ptfe grease paul sells, think thats what PSD used too
Just cranking u get virtually no oil pressure and v little oil out!!! The club can supply grease and I can assistcwith chargers but helps if yr near
I'm in Hastings. I will have to get some charger grease then. I will try get a video tonight.
The trouble with rebuilding myself is I get very frustrated very easily and then I accidentally break stuff lol.
The list is slowly building for things to do to my G.
And to rush things a track rod has just busted its balls in my GT (nicknamed the git)
Seeing as the charger needs a service i thought i might as well get it ported at the same time as going to R1 spec is only £150 more than a service at jabba sport.
To get it back on the road the G needs:
Charger rebuild
cambelt, waterpump big service etc. (what plugs and oil is best, always used 10w 40 magnitec in the git with single electrode bosch plugs)
Exhaust if FUBAR so needs new one, already has a 4 branch manifold but has some bad contact with a road at some point, doesnt blow so doubt i will replace it unless i can find a cheap one.
Also would like some advice on alarm systems, used r click before great if you want to put central locking and make wooping noises for very little money but for a serious alarm i know nothing....help?
I'd highly advise you speak to Pete on here if you're considering a charger rebuild (very well recommended by many g40 owners)
as for alarm/immobiliser I'd recommend a Clifford g5.. pricey but seriously worth it.
Wouldnt go to jabba for a rebuild, just the porting
theres an ngk spark plug equivlent to the bosch ones as they are £50 odd a set, the part number is on here somewhere, and they are just as good but half the price
id get genuine qauntum oil, 10w 40 semi, vw approve it and its only about £15 for 5 litres at tps!
Will jabba just do porting on it's own?
Yes, if i remember correctly i got quoted £240 to port the scroll, outlet and inlet to r1 spec
plus a complete rebuild kit from pete (inc top displacer bearing in the scroll) is £250 so still works out cheaper than jabba doing all the work and you know all the bearings are good :D
it seems like a daunting task, but once you start doing it, petes guide makes sense, and if you follow it word for word you wont go wrong :) think i paid £50 for all the tools needed, and its really rewarding once its finished :)
If I could find another charger that's in good condition I would do it myself. But I just don't feel confident taking my only charger apart.
Jabba prices were £495 plus shipping to get it serviced and ported. I know they don't do the top bearing but should that be caput? My charger looks like it has never been serviced. By word of mouth it's on about 80k.
If you want someone to do it for you JMR get good reviews on the Corrafo forum from the g60 boys. They've been doing laders for years.
