Title: Getting rid of rattles.
Post by: scotsjohn on May 19, 2012, 09:39:00 AM
Looking to attend to the hundred and one rattles the G has accumulated over the past twenty years. In particular, dashboard, window winder mechanism, seats, steering column and other interior squeeks. Anyone put any effort into this already got a few tips?

Once you find the cause, the soft side of some stick-on Velco tape works quite well to silence the issue. Also draft excluder rubbery stuff for household doors is pretty good and reasonably priced for this use. Both look gash though on a car interior so it's worth hiding well. Good luck! Expect it to be a never-ending quest!

Already at more or less standard ride height using a set of AVO's of unknown but pretty stiff rate. Tempted to find something softer, but using a subframe probably limits what I can use.

Just make sure screws are all there, the right length and tight. You can get anti rattle kits consisting of sticky backed foams and rubbers that you apply to vibrating surfaces.

I've got the same issue, my rattles have got to the point that I use headphones in the car! Where are the main bolts which hold the dash in as this amount of noise has to be one or a few of them being loose.

Yep, I did a huge session of finding the loose ones and it made a huge difference.

make it into a track style car and rip everything out of the interior except for the driver's seat and controls. :D

There's a darker side to you Paul. Having said that, I'll probably end up ripping everything out in the process of rattle chasing.

This is bad. You can then hear EVERY noise the rest of the car makes. Most unsettling.

but when there's no sound deadening in you can't hear the rattles for the road/tyre noise anyway :D

Made a start on this and yes,it's surprising the number of little fasteners that are loose or missing. Most missing bits from door and other interior trim so probably only available through scrappies. Sound deadening mat to boot and under rear seat area; draught excluder and little dabs of bluetack working well; a noticable differance. Thanks for suggestions, this is a worthwhile excercise.
