Title: oil pressure problems
Post by: chris2911 on May 09, 2012, 11:15:32 AM
has anyone experanced or know what the fault with my oil pressure

on tickover it has 1-2psi of oil pressure
at 3000 revs its got 30-35psi oil pressure

ive tryed then switch then decided to put a gauge on to find the readings above also the hydrolic tappets are noisey

any help would be appricated

thanks chris

New pump, used pump?

PRV on pumps can stick (usually causes high oil pressure) likewise springs can snap/bind etc causing the relif pressure to be much lower.

Pickup clean and free from crap (paint, sealant etc) and doesn't have any cracks in it, likwise the pump to gallery feed is clean and free from leaks/cracks.

Also is the gauge you're using to measure the pressure, what is it (known good?) also where are you taking the feed for it from?

used pump
picking up pressure from sensor at charger feed

think ive sorted it,its the charger disconnected charger got 40 psi on tick over and 110 reving.
tried spare charger on and the low oil pressure has gone.

the must be a interal problem in the charger so off to jabba it goes

Send it to Pete- not Jabba!

Much better service, and he'll run it on his car to check it's 100% before returning it to you.

He actually replaces all the seals/bearings- which seems to be something on several Jabba 'serviced' chargers I've had, they've missed.

what is standard oil pressure on a g on tick over.

mine has 7-8 psi of oil pressure on tickover cold and well over 1 bar when warm.

do they have oil pressure release valves on these engines

the pressure is lower when it's cold?!  That's unusual.  Perhaps a sign that the pump is unable to pump the thicker oil??

It should go right up to 100psi or thereabouts when first started from cold.  Then as it warms up, gradually drop and shouldn't really get less than 10psi at idle.

The relief valve is a pretty basic spring loaded affair, mine stuck shut once causing too much oil pressure when cold.

Something is expanding once warm and closing up a tolerance, allowing oil pressure to build.

What the history of the base engine?

Okay, so no leaks externally?
