Title: Locked out of saloon boot
Post by: Raw on March 22, 2012, 11:21:52 PM
The boot on my Mk3 Saloon is locked shut. The key turns in the lock barrel but it doesn't activate the lock to unlock the boot. Obviously this is a real problem on a Saloon as you can't get in to the boot from the cabin. I need to hear from anybody who has some experiance of fixing this problem. Please don't post here for all the world to see how to break into a polo boot but if you have some use full experiance or info to share please PM me.

Thanks,

Andy.

No - no PM's so far.

Anybody want to hazard a guess as to best approach?

Drill the lock, try and punch it out, Just cut a hole in the boot lid?

smash a rear light and get your hand in?

Drillings the name of the game; keeps damage done to the lock itself.

drill the lock barrel out and then replace it.  Or hammer it out with a screwdriver and hammer but you risk putting a dent in the boot lid

If the key turns, but doesn't release the catch, there's no point in doing anything with the lock.

I had a similar problem when the plastic clip holding the bar connecting the lock/catch broke, being a coupe I dropped the seats and flipped the catch open.

As it's a saloon, I'd source a rear light- smash the current one in there and reach around to flip the catch.

remove the rear back seat squab (pull up sharply) and then there are a few holes and gaps round the panel. reach through or use a long nose pliers or screw driver and flip the pull rod up and it will release. can be done through the parcel shelf as well but it has the seat belt brackets etc through it and the speeker holes are quite high up but they are larger so you can get your arm in.

when you get it open would WD 40 it like a mofo then clean and activte it by hand a few times and copper grease it before you shut it again.

Only just seen these replies. I've ordered a new light cluster and was waiting on that to arrive but I'll be removing the rear seat back tonight!

Fingers crossed!

Just had a look through the rear seat and can't see how the lock barrel connects to the lock! Or anything to hook onto.

Can somebody please post a pick up of their lock? ideally a saloon but coupé may do as I'd be able to tell if they were the same lock or not.

Cheers.

there will be a rod mate going from the lock down to the catch - pull it up!
