Title: Is 185/55/14 suitable for a G?
Post by: kickdown on March 19, 2012, 09:26:53 AM
Hello,

I have recently entered the G40 game by purchasing the blue G40 located in Bulgaria and I have to buy a new set of tires. Currently on the car I have 185/50/14 but it gets that this is a pretty expensive size and not only expensive but quite rare here in Bulgaria.

So I am wondering if I can put 185/55/14 which are cheaper, will make the car feel softer on bumps and are not so rare and hard to find?

Thanks in advance!

wont really make it feel softer (not noticably anyway) but you will have problems with the tyres scrubbing the arches.  I have 185/55/14 on my track wheels and also have very stiff suspension and have to cut a fair bit of metal off the arches.

I believe the previous owner have used this size and I can check with him if there was a problem with the arches. If this wasn't the case will I get other negative impact on the car with 185/55/14 in terms of stability for example?

not really, potentially a bit more tyre wall flex but then that varies so much from tyre to tyre anyway.

They are basically the same rolling radius as 195/45/15 so I can't see how they cannot scrub loads on a G40 with standard arches and standardish suspension.

The suspension is not standard.
I think it's this one: http://www.tatechnix.de/tatechnix/gx/product_info.php?info=p1187_ta-technix-sportfahrwerk-vw-polo-typ-86-86c-60-60.html

well, still, unless it's stupidly stiff (as in too stiff for road use) then I imagine it'll scrub.  Being lowered makes matters worse.

OK, I'll definitely take your point in to account and check if there is any scrubbing if I decide to use this size.

Meanwhile I requested a quote for 195/45/14 Uniroyal Rainsport 2 and if the price is acceptable maybe I'll take this route.

I do have fitted 185/55/14 yokos s-drive..
I have lowered the car with 3,5cm on H&R springs and bilstein dampers.
Its rubbing as hell, fuel cosumption has increased a lot.
If i was going to buy right now tires for my G, i would buy 185/50.
Order your tires from camskill.co.uk.. Much much cheaper than my local market.

I finally decided to use 195/45/14.

Thank you!
