Title: what is my gearbox from?
Post by: alexm866 on March 07, 2012, 03:41:02 PM
having trouble with my gearbox, its been taken out of a g40, but has a pressed rather than bolted diff that should be in ATV box, so my new quaife diff won't go in.

think i will need to get an atv but would like to know what gearbox i've been running.

code is: 8n16 05 1

that'll be an 8n gearbox then.  I think those came mainly on golfs, very similar to an 8p I think.  Not quite the same ratios as an ATV but not too far off.

cheers, same answer as everything else ive just found, so would say case solved, worked alright on the car but no good for the diff.

btw would the box make any difference to what clutches will fit the car?

Yep as Hayesey said, the 8N is a mk2 golf box similar to the polo 8P.

If you have trouble getting an ATV, the CEK is a later G40 gearbox. Also if you don't want to pay the G40 box premium then look out for a late CEG gearbox from an L or M reg mk3 1.3 polo. These have a rivited on crown wheel with same ratios as the 8P. Double check it has the rivited on crown wheel though, by draining the oil and having a look through the oil fill/drain plugs to see the rivit heads!

yeah you'll need to check some CEGs still have pressed on crown wheels.
