As we all know mk3 polo exhuast hangers are petty crap ive got a ppp system and ive seen others with pretty much every system ive seen on a g40 the mid section between the cat and the back box tends to hand pretty low to the ground, just wondering if any one had come up with any solutions to this as i keep scraping mine on things, im up as high as my coilovers will let me get and have remade the rear exhuast hanger as high as i can without cutting and welding. Is it a case of custom fabricating some new mounts to try and hang the exhuast on? dont wanna change the system as this one is brand new and all nicley tig welded ;D
Your downpipe aims really low, if you get that tucked-up you should be able to re-orientate the rest of the system to raise it up.
The way I did it was to fix the back box as high and solid as possible. I used a bobbin rubber from Halfords. Then with the straight front section tightened to to downpipe I loosened the rest off so the other sections can be twisted. I found it was all in the angle of the piece that goes under the beam. If you twist it you'll see how it affects the whole system. (mine was PSD but I think PPP is sectioned roughly the same.) I never got any scrapes after that.
The main problem with the whole shooting match is the poor geometry of the system. The weight of the back box bouncing up and down is levering against all the other joints. Try to fabricate a support from the pipe at the leading end to the floor pan above. You'll need to drill hole in the floor pan to fix a mounting bolt. Then a cheapo hanger strap from Halfords(one of those ones with a bit of flexi rubber strip and a length of pre-drilled metal)with the appropriate pipe clamp diameter, does the business. Not pretty but effective.
Thanks for the advise guys, I've got the back box fixed up as high as it will go, and have twisted it round seems reasonably tucked up now, although a due right my downPipe angle isn't very clever, my car is also to low for my liking so I'll wait untill I've messed about with the suspension untill doing anything drastic like taking the downpipe of for a bit of a rebend.
I've found it's 10x easier on a ramp. Also, if you're not used to fitting exhausts it's sometimes well worth going to ATS or somewhere and slinging someone a fiver to align it all. Only takes a few mins if you can walk around under the car and manipulate bits easier.
My mate works in ats and I wouldny trust anything moneys with a remote controll car let alone my polo!
