After failing to locate a Mk2 or Mk3 polo at 2 of my local scrappers I'm resorting to you good folk on here.
My fan / blower isn't working on any setting, folk on here reckon it's the resistor that's probably at fault but obviously I'm not certain so don't want to buy a new one as I believe they're quite expensive.
Does anyone have one for cheap?
Thanks
Dan :)
Setting 3 on the blower control is a direct connection to 12V (i.e. it doesn't go through the blower resistor) so I think something else is probably wrong. Remove the plastic cover at the back of the engine bay and the blower is the big black plastic thing in the middle. The blower resistor is a white ceramic thing wrapped with thin wire on top of the blower - you can often see that the resistor wiring is broken by looking at it. If you have a multimeter set it to resistance and look for open connections between any the pins. Depending on where the resistor breaks it is possible to get speed 3 only or speeds 2 and 3. If it's not even working on fastest speed check fuse 14. According to the Haynes manual this also runs the rear wiper - is that still working? To check the blower motor itself turn ignition off and set blower speed switch to 1, then connect a wire direct from battery to the terminal on the blower resistor that has 1 red and 1 green wire connected to it. This bypasses everything and should run the blower at full speed.
The fuse is fine, rear wiper works, the wire on the resistor looks ok too i.e. not broken. I'll have a go at connecting it to the battery directly, thanks :)
I got a resistor pack from GSF for £7ish about 2 years ago, do they not do them anymore?
try www.1stchoice.co.uk if you get stuck. I tend to use that for a lot of bits.
