Title: Car wont start, no starter motor.
Post by: GAF2 on November 05, 2011, 05:46:16 PM
Hi guys, got a problem went to start the car today and nothing. Turn the key everyting works ie fuel pump prime etc but when turn to the final position the starter motor not cranking.

Checked for feeds, got 12volts permenent live at the starter and 12volts switched at the solenoid but not turning the engine, so removed the starter and took it to the shed wired it up to my battery and it works perfectly?

So its looking like the neutral/earth wiring.

What i cant see is how the starter motor gets its negitive according to the haynes manual it is just showing an earth wire coming off the motor but there was no earth actually on the motor just the permenent live and the switched live?

Anyone Know?   Cheers Grant

It takes the earth straight from it's case - i.e the engine. It's not unknown for the solenoid to become stuck - often is fixed by whacking the starter with a bit of wood and a hammer. Sounds like this might be the case given your symptoms.

Ahh i see. aye have had starters stick before but i battered this one a fair few times before i took it off.  I have read an old post of Fred's and he said he had a starter with "dead spots" and if it stopped on one it would nt start again, might be my problem?

Motor "dead spots"'d be a brush worn out..... If you've got it in that many bits you could proably stretch the springs, but I'd go for a recon starter... Its not special, G40's are very easy to crank, so hopefully any old polo starter from a scrapyard but I'm not sure on that :-) Its normally the solenoid.....(I've had many new starters for many cars!)

Stripped the starter today. It was full of years of grime and stuff so cleaned it all out and cleaned up the comm with fine sand paper and re-dressed the brushes.  Cleaned out the field coils and everthing else with contact cleaner and blew it all out with an air gun. Rebuilt it and fitted it back on the car, Starting first time now.  Will see how long it last??

Anyone know if or where i could by spare parts so i could refurb it my self?

Depending on the car they're designed for, some of these starters on eBay may be missing threads in the mounting holes - I presume Golfs etc might use a longer bolt with a nut on the other side to secure it. Easiliy solved though with a helicoil or longer bolt.
