I have scanned in the 084 pages from my haynes gearbox manual here:

http://derby.polog40.co.uk/084_gearbox_manual.pdf

It only covers 084, not 085 but it's largely the same.  Main difference is there's no 5th gear so the end furthest from the clutch housing is different.

Actually Im pretty sure my Mk2 haynes covers the 5 speed. It was an early one as the later edition and mk3 haynes missed them out.

don't think there is a mk1 haynes is there?

go to VW for the bits.  I'd not trust the varying quality you get from places like GSF or ECP.  It's far too difficult a job to be using questionable parts for!  You don't want to be doing it twice.  My opinion anyway....

ah i see like that is it lol! yea i would like it to be right as ive broken 3 atv boxes now hence i would like to know how to rebuild one.

one more question can i get an 8p final drive from vw? and is a case of just swaping it over?

thanks richie

Dunno whether you can still get an 8P final drive from VW or not but they are a fair bit shorter than the ATV one.

I was told an 8p final drive is longer ie lower rpm in 5th gear because I use moterways I thougt it would be better?  ???

I think the 8P 5th gear is a lot longer than the ATV one but the diff ratio is shorter.

Yeah but the final drive and 5th gear are totally different

oooh lol im not to good on gearboxes.

so if i can, can i get an 8p fifth gear and put it on to give the atv a longer gear? is 5th still avalible from vw from an 8p?

thanks richie

Thats doable and Ive don that before, plus changing a 5th is way easier than a final driveor any other gear. BTW you cant fit an LSD to an 8P final drive, its presson to the diff rather than bolt on and the GT CEG boxes.....
Still got my polo gear box ratio spreadsheet somewhere...!
