Title: Fuel tank crumpled by vacuum
Post by: cheys03 on October 22, 2011, 09:37:51 PM
Finally got around to swapping the fuel tank today. Got a bit of a surprise!
Surely this isn't normal?

Sorry the pics are a bit big. Mobile photobucket doesn't like resizing a photo.

The one I took off appears to have caved in along the top! Out of curiosity, where are the part numbers found on the OEM tank please chaps? This one looks more like a pattern part but as far as I was aware it's not had a new tank previously? (been in the family since '96, though someone may have forgotten along the way)

I can only presume this was caused by severe vacuum - it did definately have a problem breathing the tank when I got it and after a long journey you could take the filler cap off a get a whoosh of air into the tank and a 'clunk' as the tank reshaped :D
Also explains why the in-tank pump mech was all bent to hell originally.

Most amusing :) Plus, I'm looking forward to increasing the 'miles per tank' figure ;)

this happened to a mates gt mk3 few years ago, think it was down to a blocked/crushed breather/vent pipe.

Had to laugh!!!

There is a little valve thing on the breather in the fillercap cowling that has a ball in it so if the car goes upside down it blocks the petrol from coming out. I thought it was a 1 way valve to start but its not. Mine was same when I 1st got it but I cleaned all mud out from cowling taking it off and cured all...

Found out the tank had been changed. It looked like the breather pipes were pinched between the body and filler neck when the muppet fitted the tank (this is the same 'mechanic' that left wheel bolts slack). Not to worry now, new tank is doing great. Cheers chaps
