Im working on a LHD g40 for a mate who owns a garage!
The G40 will start up fine and drive fine but if you turn the engine off and try to start it again it acts like a flat battery.
If you connect a fresh charged battery up its still will not start!
I have had this problem before and it was a earth!
apparently if you leave the g40 and come back it will then start up fine some times!
I guess its the same problem but are there any other issues to look for and how do i check if there is?
Check the connections on the starter motor and of course the earthing points.
I would say its an alternator problem i.e. worn bushes, but that doesnt explain the fresh battery not working. Get a voltmeter on it and see if it's kicking out 13 - 15 volts when running and if there's any juice in it when the power's off.
Coil or hall sender.
what andy said!
The alternator is pushing out 14v!
I don't think its the hall sender, when they fail or have an intermittent fault from what i have experienced in the past they can happen any time driving or not and the hall sender just stops spark not like a flat battery affect and the car runs fine until you switch it off or let it die and try to start it again.
coil is one i will change its a nice simple job and easy to rule out!
will check the alternator wiring for any damage but my guess is its the earths as it is an identical to the problem i fixed on my mates g40.
Any clicking when attempting to start a bit like a relay sticking?
Best bet would be to get a length of wood, balance on the starter motor and smack with a hammer whilst someone keeps the key in the starting position - if it starts that way i'd replace the starter motor and possibly get the ignition switch wiring looked at. You could take the starter motor off and wire it straight to the battery to test the motor. If it spins freely then you know it's not the motor - more than likely the wiring in the car.
I wouldnt rule out the hall sender.
I had a very similar problem to what your describing. I changed the coil then the dizzy, and it turns out it was the hall sender after all.
