Started a new job last week and am now doing just over 60 miles a day. I've been using the G40 as i had my Evo 6 TME stolen last weekend (but thats another story :'() Now last week i averaged 42.7mpg which i didn't think was too bad but i've dropped my speed down from 70mph to 60 mph and i can maintain this pretty much 85% of the time, i've done 220 miles and am on the halfway mark on the fuel guage, 4.5 gallons?
If my insurance pay out for the Evo i was looking at getting a Diesel A4 but if i can see the neck end of 50mpg from the G40 should i bother?
depends on how many miles you will be adding to the g40 over the time really as well.
when a work horse car could be doing the same miles per gallon if not more and the mileage wont mater as much to that car,
The G40 is ace on fuel, it's anything from 30-50 mpg. I drive a mix of A & B roads and motorway. I tend to do about 90 (clock says 100 but it's actually 92 or something) on the motorway, drive hard on the way to work (empty roads) and bimble on the way back (traffic).
I've experimented with driving like an old dear, thrashing it, "normal" and variants of each and have found the absolute worst I got was 246miles, best was somewhere around 350. I average about 280miles for 40-42 litres
It helps if you're off boost I guess, I floor it to get up to speed then lift off and never brake unless absolutely neccesary. As soon as you're on boost, more air = more fuel so if you stay off it unless accelerating then you should see pretty good returns.
Based on standard car, 195/45/14's de-restricted airbox, 65mm pulley.
Today I put toothed belt kit, 65mm pulley and full blend charger on so once I've done a few hundred miles and a couple of weeks in that I'll post again for reference between mods. Also have induction kit to fit but might leave that be for now.
Ive had over 40mpg several times out of my G, sometimes I even want to put it to standard to get more out of it. These are very respectable MPG figures for 20 year old supercharged petrol engines - very efficient if you ask me. Turbo boys get a little more if cruising around I think. Great cars.
Agree with what you are saying about the G being ace on fuel. My one is standard, still got the CAT fitted etc. and i've done 360 miles and have 1/4 of a tank left so i make that 50mpg+ :o
Think i might by a second one just to pile the miles on :P
wish mine was as good.
filled up with 38 litres to full, did 225 miles then topped up again, 37.43 litres works out at only 27.33mpg ;0(
i didnt go over 5k on the revs in that time either.
but have got a newmann cam, dewedge throttle body and 51mm too, the airbox is almnost standard been a bit de restricted a bit.
might have to stick the totally standard airbox back on.
i am running 185/55/14 tyres as well
Dmwg40 - de-restricted airbox is fine I have one and I get up to 42mpg. I'd say the cam is bringing it down.
I managed a best of 50, worst of 25, with an average of 38mpg across Europe (4000 miles) and its a highly specc'd 170bhp motor! That included 3 people and 3 peoples attire for 2 weeks, plus camping gear and food
Fuel consumption is alot less back home, but I drive the car harder, safe in the knowledge that if it blows up, I wont have to abandon the car in an Eastern European country!

maybe time to change the cam back then
Keep the insurance money and put it towards fuelling the G40 instead of buying another car. Personally I don't think you can fully enjoy a car as a daily driver if you worry about fuel consumption and mileage. The way traffic is these days there's never much chance to drive cars hard on a commute anyway.
I've been getting around the 48mpg mark for a while now using the car as a daily, not bad going i thought ;D
After all my work thats been done im impressed with what my mpg is. I covered 250 miles and only used 30 litres. So im getting around 37.8 mpg. Thats been all A road driving and a little boost driving. Happy with that, although i think the 1341 bottom end is a big help.
Just another one to add for me. I just got 45mpg! All motorway doing 65/70.
