Title: Oil catch tank
Post by: dekerf1996 on June 22, 2011, 10:22:10 AM
Hi,

Fairly new to G40 running (not owning as i have had a long term project that i have never driven for too long) and have got myself a G daily. I am trying to iron out a few slight concerns with it currently.

Now it has the BRM done to it, and the oil breather is going to a plastic bottle as its catch tank in the engine bay. Whilst this works, i don't think its ideal. So am looking to replace it with a proper catch tank.

However the catch tanks i have seen have an inlet, outlet and either come with a breather filter or don't appear to come with a breather.

So which one do I need? Because currently the plastic bottle just has one large pipe going into it? Is this correct?

If i get one of these catch tanks, obviously i need to connect up the current pipe to the catch tank, but what about outlet, or other hole on them?

And do i need one with a breather or not?

You need one with a breather, you can then use the other outlet of the catch tank to:

1) Vent to the floor (might drip a small amount of oil from the pipe when stood)
2) Vent into airbox (will remove some of the oil vapour, but slightly defeats the point)
3) Filter onto the breather outlet.

Hope this helps

Pete

Pete,

Thanks for that.

So if i get one without a breather, then use the second outlet as the breather, and get one of those mini filters for it?

I got one like that, except its rectangular.

I have mounted it to the jabba cold air shield.

Want some pictures?

Dunx, thanks for the offer on the tank, I would have taken it, but its red.... silver or black would have been fine.... call me a tart but must look right for me as well as function properly.

Jezza, if you could get some pics of your set up that would be great, thanks

Cheers

Mark

Ok, little bit harder to show full setup as the engine is out and in many pieces on my garage floor. Mine is red as the black ones i looked at were an extra £20 and i thought paint is cheaper so it will be painted soon.

But here is how i mounted it

And what it looks like when in the car

Those pics gave me some inspiration :-) got a cheapy catch tank for now, but I am building a heat shield with a built in catch tank on the end.... All one unit, should be nice and tidy once done :-)
