Title: metal head gasket for the g40 {question}
Post by: poloeatonm45 on September 23, 2008, 09:43:06 PM
hi all i know the metal head gasket up,s the comp a little on the g40 but what does this mean? is it done for a performance increase? or do people fit the metal gasket because its stronger? and is it really any better than the standard gasket? im only asking because i have the head off my g at the mo and it had a metal gasket in but im not sure weather to fit a metal one again or a standard one.

I ran the standard head gasket in my race car for years had no problems at all on a car making nearly 160 brake. I used the head gasket set from G&S part number 11477D £22.90 (VAG 030-198-012B).

Have now fitted the steel option as have been told it's stronger and the car has gone up in power so while the engine was being fitted up I put one in. G&S part number 11133B £11.80 (VAG 030-103-383AH).

Don't know if the Steel gasket is really any stronger and as you say it does up the comp which isn't ideal, my personal opinion is that the standard head gasket is preferable at least up to 160bhp, over that I can say the steel one works if you feel you want peace of mind.

upping the CR slightly isn't necessarily a bad thing it can lead to a small power increase and better off boost performance.  But you need to be slightly careful, always use high octane fuel and if you want to run very high levels of boost then you'll prob want to decrease CR.

Would a full blend with toothed belts qualify for being "lots of boost"? Wondering whether the metal head gasket is worth going for when I have my head done.

it'll be fine, I'd make sure to always use super unleaded (you prob do anyway...).
