Hi everyone
I have just purchased a white g40 which has been seen to by jabba sport. the dyno print out i have shows 171bhp at around 6800rpm. sometimes i get the feeling it pulls better than others. seems to be totally random when it happens. its fitted with the non toothed pullyes, is that going to make a massive difference at that kind of hp? i will try to get some pictures of the car for you as you may know it. im told it was a feature car at one point but could all be lies. any advice on how to keep them running sweet etc would be helpful and wtf is with everyone taking off the pipe that goes through the rocker cover? doesnt that prevent the charger getting lubed and eventually seizing? its fitted with a jabba sport r1 charger so any advice on that kind of charger would be helpful too.
cheers
hi, welcome to the forum. sounds like a good car, whats the spec to get 171bhp? sounds veyr good anyway.
I guess the belt could be slipping causing it to feel slower sometimes. Toothed belts will sort it!
People remove the boost return for two reasons:
- so the charger isn't taking in hot air, always cold air from atmosphere
- so you can lubricate it with ptfe grease not the oil/water emulsion crap that comes out of the oil breather (run a catch tank for a bit and then decide if you want the charger being lubricated by the contents of it!)
You'll find there are two camps on this subject, one set of people very much against the idea and one set very much for the idea. I fit into the latter but it's my own opinion and experience over the years of messing with g40s, you need to make your own mind up.
Paul.
Welcome.
As for keeping it running sweet - all normal things like up to date plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm. Plus obviously a charger which doesn't need serviceing (about 25k on a small pulley 35-40 on a normal one, depending on driving obviously).
As for the boost return mod - you can get the proper grease from us! see the main site or for sale forum.
If you want to re-run the car to show its power - then the rolling road day 15th november will enable you to do so and to meet us all
Pete

anyone got any idea what this pipe does and why its blocked off? asked a few lads i know at the vw garage and i may as well of asked my grandma. does it matter? any help would be ace
From the factory the cars have a canister that stores petrol vapour from the tank, when the car is started that pipe controls a valve which releases the vapour into the engine.
It's all to do with emissions, by now I'd expect most people have removed them.
I knew that G40 looked familiar, so I looked in my old photo's.

It belonged to Kim Newbury & Carol Richordson in Club GTI at the time, it was featured in VWMotoring at one point, 03 I think. I'll need to look through my old magazines to find it.
yeah I thought I'd seen that numberplate somewhere before! Funny how the same G40s keep cropping up over and over again. I suppose it's just because there's so few of them.
Like neil said, that vac pipe normally runs to the charcoal canister which a lot of people remove, it's nothing to worry about as long as it's blocked properly and doesn't leak. Check that it's sealed properly.
amazing picture :) anything else you can find would be great. looks like its rolling on 14's there, looks pretty sweet. i have a set of those but i think the 13's just make it that little more original. whats everyone elses opinions etc? i know getting the tyres for the stock 13's is a pain unless you wants to run firestones.
My friend Karen Andrews used to own that G40 a few yeards ago. I have the feature from Vw Motoring March 2004 infront of me here.
