I'd not let them touch it if they are asking that!

i was thinking the same thing but this was the second place i took it to and they both said they wasnt sure and my tracking was badly out and i just put my brand new tyres on so i didnt want to keep driving round with it out so i just bit the bullet and had them do it.

I bought a Gunson Trackrite for £60 from Machine Mart thinking that it would be worth a go to do it myself - pay for itself over time and not having to take it to a garage. It's actually surprisingly accurate and easy to use. Had it a year and tracked my car about 3-4times already (suspension changes), and our other car once. It's definitely paid for itself. No uneven tyre wear, no drifting in one direction etc. For something so simple, it's very effective. Can't do castor or camber though.

sounds good that mate, the place i took it to in the end had the new computerised tracking system that does everything all together, tracking, castor and camber.
