Title: Quaife diff with CEG 'box
Post by: cheys03 on March 02, 2011, 09:39:02 PM
Would it be possible to fit a Quaife diff to a CEG (late 8P effectively) 'box?
I remember reading somewhere (probably a post by Nick_S) that the CEG has a riveted crown wheel?

Just thinking of options really. Cheers

From memory its only the late CEG's which had the rivited crown wheel. If you can get the box number next to the code I'll tell you which you have or just drain the oil and have a look through the fill and drain holes :)

Thanks Nick. It's from an M reg car. The only place where I've got CEG from is the boot sticker, where abouts on the box can I find it's number? Cheers

Being on an M-plate I'd put money on it having the LSD friendly diff. On top of the bell housing it will read something like **CEG***** where the stars are other digits, but essentially if yours ends in a 4 then you are good to go ;D

Chances are it'll be reef on an m plate.

Hehe, score! Many thanks for the info. I'll double-check it following the above directions obviously. Saves shelling out £250+ for an ATV. The ratios in the CEG seem OK for my use.
I take it the rivets need drilling out and replacing with bolts (available from VW?) when the Quaife is fitted?

Yeah you can drill out the 6 rivits which look like this

The nuts, bolts and plate washers will set you back about £60 from VAG but they are special fasteners and not easy to get hold of!

Chris - give me a shout if you're about to buy a Quaife, I'm toying with the idea of one too, so might see if I can get a group buy going.

Truthfully, I'm still at the 'dreaming/weighing up options' stage. Will definately give you a shout though if/when looking for a Quaife and will keep an eye on any group buys.
Cheers

To be honest, I'm at the same stage - I have a Gripper on the shelf, and a house that the boss would rather I spent my cash on, lol.
