Sounds like element Is touching down to earth some where some how ether that or it's blown ( obviuosly would only cause popping if the element is in an earth metalic sheath not sure if they are??) I'd be checking the element over

Often, it's the motor starting to seize up, putting more strain on the electrics and popping fuses as a result.

I'd go for that; crap getting in to the fan housing did it for me.

Either replace the heater fan or try unseizing it. I sprayed WD40 on the bearings of mine but it stinks for weeks afterwards. For the 30 or so mins it takes to replace it, that's what I'd do now.

Steve's right, I tried the WD40 trick and it was literally weeks before the smell went. Unfortunately is was only a matter of minutes before the sqweak came back!  ::)

Silicone spray has worked quite well for me in the past - lasts a good year and is a bit less offensive to the nostrils.
