Hi
I have been around for a while now and i am deeply impressed with the knowledge u guys have.
So when i now start a new phase of the polo 1WTD´s life some things needs to be sorted.
so!
This week i´ve started a new project, my turbo converted polo diesel will now be updated.
The engine will produce approx. 170bhp and 230Nm.
Now i really need this forums help.
Clutch, what can i use? 200mm?? or even bigger with mods?
Can i use the G40 clutch with my flywheel?
Gearbox is there ant thing u can do to increase the stiffness and strength?
Do i have to do any thing at all??
Gearbox is 8p, ratios, can i change any thing to get the revs down and increase topspeed?
The difference between the gearboxes like che, ceg i.a? i know the ratios are diffrent but is there any thing to gain material wise?
please help is needed fast in this so please help me out here??

you can use the g40 clutch or early afh -200mm with any mk1-3 flywheel i believe - as long as the flywheel is in good condition (no wear ridges etc)
As for boxes - the g40 box - the code i forget which has longer ratios than the 8p
sounds good.

I have a feeling that the gears from an 8P along with the final drive from an ATV might give some nice long ratios. Although I'm not 100% sure on that as I've not actually done the maths. Best bet would be to get hold of a copy of ETKA which I believe shows the ratios for the different gears and final drives.
For a clutch, something like a Helix Paddle or Helix Organic should cope. The paddle would be best but they are a bit of a pain if you are using the car daily. These clutches aren't cheap but if you want something that'll stand up to 230lb/ft torque reliably then you'll need to spend some money.

I was looking into this as a possibility, but how easy is it the change a final drive? Or alternatively all the gears...?
Edit: Spelling
same job really, to change the final drive you have to remove all the gears from the layshaft.
Its a mission to change the final drive ratio as the crown wheel and layshaft are a matched set. Likewise 1st and 2nd gears are part of one of the shafts too from what i can see. 8P 5th into an G40 is dead easy swap though. My old saloon G40 which Andy Skelton now owns has the 8P fifth with a 3.333 G40 final drive ratio.
thanx to all the input you have given is very valuble to me.
New questions.
After beeing surfing around in etka i found out that there is a gearbox called CNU and CWR that have a better ratio then 8p.
The 1.6 (75bhp) ABU engine has these gear boxes apperently.
Is there any info om here or the net about the streghtness of these gearboxes.???
I can se some diffrences in etka on some of the internals, but what it really mean i don´t know.
Is there any one who´s got some info around these 2 boxes in diffrent applications or just experiences please let me know.

The problem with 6n 085 gearboxes and later is that they have riveted on crown wheels. These rivets are prone to failing (also a common problem in some Golf 02 boxes too). You can buy a repair kit from VW to replace the rivets with bolts. After that it will be as strong (or as weak!) as any other 085 gearbox.
Ok, so no increased strength??
Rivets i knew about, but dont worry,. The box will be rebuilt anyway.
but thanx
thomas
sorry for the spelling!!!!
Yeah the 6n and 6n2 085 gearbox are less robust than the earlier ones. Along with the crown wheel rivits, the differential bearings wear out quicker due to the modified output flange spring mechanism.
The other gearbox almost identical to the CNU is the CHL (both on 1.6 mk3 golfs) which have the 8P 1-5 gearings, but with a longer final drive ratio. I've got several 'worn' gearbox types as spares so can have a look at building up a custom box at somepoint.
Today i´ve ordered a cluth including pressure palte and baring from ebay.de
200bhp and 280nm is it good for...we will see...
Price, a real bargain.... 209 euro incl freight....
