Just had a quote in an email and seems like a good price, want to get some opinons from others on the price etc
I think i asked for a rebore to 76mm
"For a full bottom end rebuild the cost is £1295 with the head we have different options porting only and rebuild £410, Porting with big exhaust valves £670, Porting with big inlet and exhaust valves £950, to be honest the last option is not really worth the extra money unless money is no object as the gains are quite small. For fitting the engines we charge £500 this includes removing cleaning and painting."
seems pretty expensive to me. I paid just short of £500 for my ported, big valve head from the "manintheshed", the quality of the work was absolutely top-notch. Although I believe the jabbasport 31mm exhaust valves are no longer available (since the manufacturer has a min order qty of 100 units which is enough for 25 heads!). Do you know what valves they plan to use?
How come you want a 76mm over-bore? 77mm is the usual one to go for which gives 1341cc.
So basically they are saying they'll want £2465.00 (plus VAT?!?) for a drive-in/drive-out job to over bore to 76mm, big valve ported head? It sounds very expensive to me but then I'm not used to paying for all the labour when ever I do anything to my car.
You also need to ask what pistons they are going to use and just what else they will replace on the engine for this money (core plugs, end gaskets, oil seals, bearings etc...etc...)?
Waiting to hear back from them with alot more info about pistons, valves etc. as i did ask that in the 1stplace but they didnt say anything about that.
I pretty sure that they use wossner pistons. I ment to put 77mm instead of 76mm.
I asked for a price incl vat but im double checking with them.
Will see what they say.
The reply was
The valves are custom 1 piece items from GS valves the pistons are Wossner. Within the engine all bearing seals, gaskets and oil pump are replaced and core plugs are removed while the block is acid cleaned and then they are replaced.
what size valves? I forget where manintheshed said were the jabba ones came from now, that could have been GS. Anyway, presumably they can get them for you which is good.
Who is this manintheshed?
You'll have to get in touch with him through club gti, do a search for. Themanintheshed on their forum. I assume he is still doing heads for people
He just did mine lovley bloke, exellent work fair prices aswell.
on a seperate note james how come youre going 1341 is your engine playing you up?? or you planning on going turbo and want the forged reliablilty running higher boost compression ratio for off boost driving ??
As for the prices of things. Firstly the head work i used the man in the shed and as i said hes a top bloke highly recommended. i know he does the work for jabbasport they add there bit on top then vat then you pay top price so go direct through him if you can mine ended up costing me £300 inc vat for getting it overhauld and ported.
The big valve situation as hayesey is correct. There is one set of 31mm exhaust valves left the stainless versions that jabba used to sel on there website and the minuim order is quaite large so no one fancys stumping up that sorta price for a load ofvalves that may take them 5 years to shift ( g40 bvh aren't exactly high demand) the one set left " man in a shed " has but .... the man in the shed has a head casting wich is owned by jabba sport and has had the new larger seats to sit the arger valves inserted init but he has paid for this so if he does a big valve head and uses the last set of valves and uses a new casting he is out of pocket wich means the only way to get a big valve head is to buy one through jabbasport for he abouve mentioned prices ( im guessing by the prices of things and the work offered the company your talking about james i jabbasport !!)
Although my final desision was to pay £300 for a ported head rather than £670 as do you realy fancy paying £670 for an extra 10 bhp? If youv got money to spunk or its on your wish list then maybe!!
As for the bottom end ive just had to rebuild the bottm end i bought from phil j as it was completley fucked as in piston rigns werent correctly installed meaning hat they werent floating they where stuck in one position. shit loadsa swarf in th engine in the oil pump and in the sump !! bore to piston clearance was too much other than that it was as he said "An exellent engine" (not bitter about this at all either !!!) any way i digress, the point im tryig to make is its cost me in the region of £700 to rebuild te bottom end with a new block new rings bearingsgaskets and pumps new clutch (done by a machine shop not me as i dont have the tools or clean area to do it in) so that price sounds about right as youve got to add i new pistons at between £400-£550 all i can say is it gets very expensive
Mine was around £1600, ported head with standard valves, and with original pistons. This includes a grand spent on all genuine VAG parts (all gaskets and seals, oil pump and chain, water pump, big end and main bearings, rings, valve guides and tappets, nuts and bolts etc). Labour on the bottom end was £300 and the headwork was £250.
So 2 grand for a 1341 and BVH including the extra £500 for valves and pistons seems ok to me, as long as the parts used are OE quality or better and everything is replaced.
Cheers for that antony. Im only thinking about doing this just for more power but i think i will leave the bottom end for now, i wanted to get forged pistons as some point but im not sure if you can buy them without having to re bore the bottom end?
The head is something i would like to go, if not getting bigger valves i would like to get it flowed.
Oh and them prices were from tsr performance. I thought i would ask them as, you know james from ilchester with mk2 golf conversion with a bam engine, he said they were preety good, but then that was only a conversion.
The £300 sounds like more my price range, i will get in contact with him and see what he says. When i looked at jabba i think they do an exchange basis or something for £555 incl vat.
Suprisingly man in a shed does tsr's head work aswell !! You can get forged pistons stand sizes I think but if your going to the expense of rebuilding the bottom end the. You may aswell spend £100 on boring it out to get more cc's
Yea Tsr are good they do some good work including a seat ibiza with a mk4 r32 lump with nitrous init that made pvw.
Why don't you rey some headwork a cam to suit it vernier pulley n a remap ?? Depends how many more ponies you want I Spose.
lol really, he must be a very busy man. TSR seam really good for engine work.
I have got a cam already and im waiting to hear back from andy so it can be fitted and remapped.
The car is going away in november for dry storage till march so i have time to save for the "G fund"
Just wanna get it mapped before the rolling road day.
Hope it goes well mate what you aiming for ?
maninshed has probably done more g40 heads than anyone else, he does/did jabbasport ones too.

Power wise? I know it was running 149bhp but i think after the cam and remap i would be looking at 160bhp?
I would like to get the head done then look in the direction of bottom ends. I wanna keep it an original g40 so im gonna keep the the lader on there. Also gonna keep my standard charger too.

Hook us up dude :)
Hahahah this is all bravado from people in the business! Chap who did mine said he does some TSR cylinder heads. It depends on peoples work load, sometimes they have to sub contract ;)
