Title: g40 kit car, has anyone seen or done one?
Post by: liam on September 13, 2010, 08:28:02 PM
i have been looking at caterham style kit cars for a while on the net as i intend to get one in the future.
i have seen them with all sorts of engines in, big 2.0 turbos to hyabusa turbos etc. etc.

has anyone ever seen or heard of a g40 one thats been done as i imagine it would be an absolute animal

Nope. Sounds like a fun idea though!

I've not come across anything that I can recall with a water cooled VW engine in it. The biggest problem with building a traditional Seven-style car with a G40 would be the front engine/rear drive combination and sorting a gearbox. But there are plenty of mid engined kit cars about now, no reason I can see why you couldn't use a G40 motor, and the charger would be right behind your head! I think a Sylva Riot or MK Engineering Midi would be perfect for this.

What about audi quattro running gear? Drive all wheels, there's a quattro 90 at the yard I work at...

There's a couple I think that use the 5 cyclinder engine and perhaps a few other of the Audi bits, fairly sure there's nothing designed around the Quattro system though. The best donor cars are the ones in plentiful supply and cheap, hence Ford mostly. Dax did (maybe still do) a Cossie based 4x4 Seven style car. Got an MX5 at the yard? A few 7 replicas are based on them.

Some formula V / formula koenig cars use a Polo engine with a beetle transaxle. You turn the CWP round in the beetle box to let it run in a mid engined car. I'm not sure what adapter is needed to connect the block up to the box.

I did spy a mk2 golf at inters this year spaceframed with an audi lump inline, awesome engineering, wish i'd had a camera!!

No mx5's, just VW and Audi (VAG, seat, skoda etc).

Although mx5 running gears probably ideal..

Ideal for keeping the rear bodywork low. Those kit cars I mentioned, and others with the same layout, use the whole engine and transmission assembly as it is, the same way you'd put another engine in the back of a hatch. Z-Cars are now supplying a universal cradle for this type of set up, with wishbone suspension. I must admit, I like the idea of a stripped out mk3 Polo with the engine in the back. But not being a biker a superbike engine with a 12k redline and 6-speed sequential 'box is the way I've gone with my kit car, if I ever finish it! I bought it for ragging so I could keep my G nice and clean, but it's now 7 years later neither have been on the road since!

An MX5 based car is only worth building though if the donor is fucked, the MX5 is more practical, if a bit hairdresser!
Was that Audi engine in the front of the Golf? Was it Quattro'd as well?

With enough time, skill, and/or money I guess you can do whatever you fancy.

engine in the front inline 4wheel drive. It was white.

I just couldn't drive an mx5, hate the shape, hate it, fucking hate it, bloody rag tops!

I'd rather have an inpractical "toy" than a "practical" daily mx5. Fuck the roof get wet go home have a shower haha.
