just any decent brand 10w/40 semi-synth.  I'm using quantum because I got 20l of it on ebay.  It's what VW used to sell until recently.  GSF used to do Quantum and then swapped to Fuchs which is ok too, now they use Carlube which is a bit cheapo.

I used to use Mobil 1 in my GT engine which I bought to go in my '81 Mk 1 in around 1992 and it still sits in my '84 Mk2 which I've not used for a while (I've had my G for about four years now). I only stopped using it because it got so damned expensive, otherwise I'd recommend it! I have used Quantum semi synth with the G, and now use Mobil S semi synth which seems good stuff at a reasonable price.

You're good to go with 10/40, but if you're looking at using your pride and joy in the kind of weather we had last winter then a change to 0/40 over the winter months might be worth while. If you're running a high miler and can afford a bit extra then 10/60 looks to be a good bet.

I use Mobil Super S semi synthetic too.

Is the Quantum stuff not just what UK dealers use as opposed to the factory oil? The reason I am wondering is that in the Irish dealers its Castrol SLX that is used and they have all this VW marketing info about it being the one and only oil recommended by VW

Yep, Ouantum is the UK franchise. In Germany it was Fuchs oil from factory.
