Title: quite a few problems... dont know where to start
Post by: liam on June 21, 2010, 02:27:54 PM
got my car back on the road the other day after suffering a blown charger,
now its over heating and spitting all her water out when she gets up to temp, thermostat works ok and the system has been bled.
second problem is the idle is lumpy and jumps up and down from 800rpm to 1500rpm before settling down,
then at cruising speed if you press the pedal to accelerate it jerks quite badly and does this every time i accelerate,
and last problem is in 4th and 5th when accelerating it hits 80mph and splutters and feels very flat and doesnt really get anywhere over 80mph.

so ive took it back to the garage to have the over heating looked at and have all the ignition timing checked and set properly first and have decided to get all new earth straps, lamda sensor, new rad and fan and temp sensors.

gsf list two lamda sensors a 3 wire and a 4 wire does anyone which one i need as my car is in the garage.
also what else should i be renewing to help eliminate my running problems.

where could i get a proper g40 rad and earth staps from as a lot of g40 parts at my vw dealer are now obsolete.
any help much appreciated

that is often a sh1t header tank and/or cap.  it doesnt seal - so as soon as pressure builds it over flows.  Is it a black cap?  new ones are blue.

Only about £15 for both from gsf

my cap is blue but if they are only £15 i might aswell get them,
does anyone know what lamda sensor i need to get from gsf, a 3 wire or 4, other wise ill have to pop down the garage and whip mine off, thanks, liam.

Not sure but they should be able to order one for a G40. Dont get anything other than a bosch. They will probably try and pedal another brand at you but I wouldnt bother with that. I had a cheap one off them for my VR and it lasted under a year before it was giving me all sorts of grief.

a g40 has 3 wires going to the lambda but there is an earth wire near the plug so I'm not 100% sure if they class that as a 3-wire or a 4-wire but there should only be one for a g40.  Like sam says, make sure it's a bosch one, the cheapo ones are a false economy.

on the GSF website they only list one for a G40 and it is their part code 930VG0300.  I suspect they are trying to sell you the "generic" 3 or 4 wire ones they list, don't bother with these, pay the extra £20 for a proper one.

just got my broken (new) dizzy back from my unit that was destroyed by a dodgy newman cam,
can anyone confirm a part number for a proper g40 distributor,
mine reads 0 237 521 048

030 905 205 P or 030 905 205 T are the right vw numbers

yours is a bosch number which should be  0 986 237 668

030905237X  is exchange number for a new one from vag

all in here http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=7488&hl=distributor&st=25

got my car back from the garage today after having the ignition timing sorted and she runs a lot smoother and has sorted most of the problems i had,
the only running problems left now is she still jerks a bit at cruise speed but mainly shes still overheating,
im going to change the header tank and thermostat tomorrow along with the black and blue sensors in the thermostat housing,
is there anything else i should be looking at? could my rad be fooked aswell?

right then i changed my expansion tank and cap today, then took her out for a bit up the nearest dual carriage way and put her through her paces,
it seems to have the problem sorted (thanks again peteg40) she did`nt lose a drop of water but she still runs hotter than she has ever run before at just over 100 degrees,
but saying that ive never really used her in the summer before plus i hav`nt put any coolant in the system yet  and ive got a bigger intercooler in the way of the rad,
is it normal to run at that temperature in the summer or have i still got a problem,
thanks, liam.

did you change the thermostat?

could be the black temp sender (sends signal to clocks) reading wrong

could just be that hot due to it being block

80-90 is normal

im changing the thermostat today vw messed the order for that yesterday,

im going to strip the whole coolant system down and inspect all parts but what sort of thing would cause a blockage,

i changed the black temp sender along with the blue one yesterday,

so my problem still exists then cos im not running at 80-90 thats for sure.

had an idea.... check that the coolant pipes are on right, you can get them on wrong (i.e. pipes might fit a couple of different outlets!) so they dont circulate properly.

my rad is off the car now and to be fair it looks pretty battered,
i think im going to get a nissens radiator and see what its like and ill have a good check over all the coolant pipes aswell.
