Title: Where to start?
Post by: Pulling_power on June 16, 2010, 11:26:35 PM
Evening all,

I'm looking at a G40 for a run around / fun car so the misses can use our other motor while I'm galavanting around!

The question is where do I start? What do I look for in a G40? What should I expect to pay and get for my money?

Thanks all

Makes sure you check for service history, especially for the charger when you go to view or enquire.

The bodywork tends to suffer the most in the battery tray and can rust through into the cabin.

2 things i can think of.

Thanks again, I did search for he buyers guide with no joy......

That chassis thread makes you appreciate a original good condition car!

Up until 5 years ago I had a G plate R 5 GT Turbo, my dad owned from new with 35k on it, completely standard.

They are nice little cars, but yes they are french, and i'm sure if you rubbed the paint hard enough you could still see the Heinz labels  where the panels are made of tin cans.....

Thats lovely, I'd have had a hard time selling that.

Here is the Spaniel's guide. http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2476.0.html (http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2476.0.html)

it was the paintwork but the overheating like afew R5's seem to suffer from! The gearbox was pretty fubared too.

well as you can see the paintwork on that one was mint! here is a link to the rest of the album if your bored.... http://s165.photobucket.com/albums/u48/tomellaway/Renault%205%20GT%20Turbo/ (http://s165.photobucket.com/albums/u48/tomellaway/Renault%205%20GT%20Turbo/)

They did suffer from overheating, and fuel pump problems, Never had any issues with the Gear box. but this one was not modified at all, we owned it from new, i remember going to pick it up when i was about 9 with my dad.

No, its a sad story really...

Like i mentioned it was my dads, his weekend car, up till 1997 it had 17000 miles on it, when he passed away in 97 it sat in the garage for a couple of years, got run every month etc. My mum drove it (i was 15 in 97!) now and again, then we moved and the new house had no space so we sold it on for 4k, not bad since it was £9999.99 new! I wanted to keep it but it was too nice to drive and modify so it kind of had to go!

The chap who bought it picked it up on a trailer and that was the last i saw of it, It did resurface a year or so later, but the Tw@t who bought it had modified it....  :'(  i'd like to think its still around, but probably not in that form any more!
