Hi. first post here. sorry if its in the wrong place, thought it be best in the engine section.
Theres a g40 i want but it has no Charger. Ive heard about using an eaton charger instead of the standard charger. these are around £150+ arent they? Now if i ws to buy an eaton what other things do i need to do to the G40 for it to work. Im guessing i cant just stick it in the gap the G40 charger was can i?
Or is it cheaper to buy a G40 charger?
the engine would be going in a mk1 golf (dont abuse me :D)
Just wondering which would be best?
Thanks for any help
Hi, welcome to the forum!
It will be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand G-Lader than try to make an Eaton work. Eaton conversions have been done but they aren't any where near as straight forward as simply bolting it up to the same bracket the G-Lader bolts to. There's a few threads around on here of people currently doing Eaton conversions.
It'd be easier to put a K03 turbo conversion kit on. But still, this will cost more and be more work than just getting hold of a G40 charger. Keep an eye out on the for sale section on here.
thanks for the reply.
just abit wary buying a 2nd hand G-Lader due to not always knowing its history and then having to spend £3-400 on getting it serviced. but then if the Eaton is going to cost that + all the other stuff then i guess a G-Lader would be better.
if it's going in a mk1 golf - if you turbo it then you don't have to worry about the O/S engine mount as you can use the mk1 mount. providing that is- your using a 1.3model mk1 and not a 1.8 model
yeah its going in a 1.3. I dont think id want a turbo (not yet anyway). Looking for a 2nd hand charger seems hard, doubt they come up for sale often do they?
Is this what is involved with an Eaton?
QuoteGoing eaton isn't as simple as buying a charger and sticking it on. it requires proper mounting bracket (psd used to make the only decent kits but are no longer in business).
After you've got the charger mounted with the psd kit you'll need a set of toothed pulleys to run it (the psd kit uses toothed pulleys, it may be possible to use double v belt type pulleys but it would involve alot more money + time to designed, drawn up and then get made.)
Once you've got the eaton mounted you then need to think about the camshaft, eatons will run on standard g40 cams and make good power (189bhp has been had) but running on the standard camshaft will make the engine run very hot and you risk melting it.
The psd eaton cam is designed to help cool down the combustion chamber and avoid melting the engine oh and it helps the engine rev to 8k
Once you've got the charger mounted and the right cam in, you then need a suitable chip (only available from psd) and a way of cooling the charge (reason I invested in a decent chargecooler).
Is it just the charger that's missing? I fixed up a G40 that had been running with no charger for a couple of years and there were several other parts that had been removed. I got most bits second hand through this forum but it still adds up; stuff like oil feed and return pipes, some of the boost pipes, intercooler etc. In all it probably cost me £600+ in parts to get the engine back to G40 spec including a recently rebuilt R1 charger. That was more than I paid for the car in the first place.
G40 chargers come up for sale every now and then. I guarantee it'll be cheaper than making an eaton work.
well it just need a charger and alternator i think, alternators arent hard to come by are they? :D
just waiting for a charger will annoy me. although guess would give me time to clean the engine etc
there's at least one in the for sale section right now....
he wants £300 for it :D:D
that's pretty normal. It'll cost more than that to make an eaton work, or a turbo etc...
£300 for one that needs a rebuild?
i do agree that is quite reasonable.
Watch this space - a friend of mine may may be selling his recently rebuilt and ported charger for a decent enough price.
