don't need anything massive with the g-lader, it doesnt put THAT much heat into the intake.  But you cant really fit one on the front of a polo that'll be TOO big

I ran a Renault IC off something in my Golf and noticed a little "lag" but it was minor and only really noticeable low down. It was about 10mm shorter than a Merc sprinter IC (I had one of them to try too). I had to chop a tiny bit out the tow eye to make it fit.

So to back up what Hayesey said, I can't imagine it's possible to get one big enough to have any issues in a Polo. Does depend on flow rate too I suppose!

That's way too big for a G40 engine though! With the G40 not being a big, high pressure blower the pressure drop of the air through that would most likely be too much, but it does depend on the core design. And it would limit airflow to the rad behind as well as heating the air that does make it through, so your engine cooling would suffer. Unlike a turbo conversion, the G-lader with a standard intercooler only puts real heat into the inlet at full throttle with the recirc butterfly closed. Even then it won't be as hot as turbo-supplied air. Turbo'd Gs will need a better one than a G40'd car, but still!

Best reason for changing the intercooler though is the age and poor condition of most of the original ones. I've no experience with trying other ones, and as performance depends on several factors and not just size the best way to assess suitability is by trying different ones and measuring temps. People who have done this could recommend something but I'm afraid I can't.

i have used a forge universal fmic on my g and custom pipework,
i would say that with a larger intercooler you notice that the boost kicks in about 500 rpm
later when using the g-lader, as for using a turbo i will find out shortly!

Yeh it was a little, but it only cost £30 from the scrappy and I could change it in about 15mins if needs be. ;D One of the advantages of a mk2 really!

You can always add something like water wetter to reduce coolant/engine temps. it makes quite a difference. An oil cooler is a good thing to do too if you have temperature problems.

You had room on the Golf to fit an oil cooler as well? :D

Sorry to hijack the thread :-\

Yup, I'd have had to shuffle things round a little though. There's quite a few pre-drilled/formed slots on the lower brace bar in a mk2 to move the rad about if you want (obviously for the different engines they did- there were different rads) although you'd have to custom make the top brackets, all I did was get some tin and bend it, made them in about 5mins and sprayed them with some gay blue colour left over from a camper restoration. It was a bit of a work in progress that car, I wish I'd never swapped it, the kid broke it about 6 weeks later, I was gutted :'( Makes me want to make another one now.

Also, (again from memory so may be wrong here) the mk2 golf 16v rad is the same size as a G40 one (which is no different from any of the other 1.3 VW rads of its time) but a little deeper so would offer more cooling I presume? Can't see any other reason for them designing/ making it otherwise.
