hi guys n gals,
just finished a freshen up on my G which entailed
- a few service bits n bobs,
- absolutely minimal skim to ensure it was flush
- new stem seals/ new valve guides/ valves lapped.
happy that both mating surfaces block/head are flush/clean;
- replaced cambelt
- H/G & head bolts (40Nm, 60Nm, 90deg, 90deg)
but DID NOT change water pump as it has only done 10k...
the engine did loose a little bit of coolant under hard revs at high end prior to the work just completed.
(did have K-Seal in as a temporary meassure but head was fully bathed & cleaned)
it could be important to note that due to starting issues the car has been bump started which has nackered the oil seals in the charger, therefore there is oil sitting in the bottom of the intercooler.
(charger is still boosting fine but obv. going to being fixed but not before the starting issue is resolved.)
-could the oil vapours cause the H/G not to seal correctly?
-is it possible that the head has a small crack?
symptoms:
- Smoking lots
- Coolant Loss
- Doesnt run badly!!!
- No mayo on the cam cover cap or oil in expansion tank...
all suggestions welcome, give me some faith i just want my G back the way it should be!
thanks

what colour smoke is it? the charger seals weeping will cause oil burning.
as for coolant loss - thats white smoke, you sure you aren't loosing it onthe water pump seal/thermostat housing etc?
i think he has answered the question on the smoke.
"which has nackered the oil seals in the charger, therefore there is oil sitting in the bottom of the intercooler."
well you are blowing oil into the combustion chamber! = smoke
water loss - is there an obvious leak? and have you had a look around the water pump? you may have torn the seal tightening the cambelt
i did wonder this about the water pump seal... is this common? it was visibly leaking prior to tightening but worked on the assumption that this would be expected... happy that the thermo housing is ok... it is new and has sealant to assist!
from what i can tell i can smell coolant being burnt but this could be the oil vapours...
it will gather a cloud of smoke when i stop/move off and smokes more visibly when i put it under more acceleration, not sure if this info would indicate anything?
sadly this smoke does seem fairly white... could off timingcause it to smoke?
I recall when my charger seals went in the past (to the point it stopped the car running) it plumed out completely black...
ok so tonights update...
topped up the oil and coolant...
started it up and it ran rough as hell, lumpy literally like it was running on 3 this cleared up once it started to warm up.
didnt really smoke much at first but did more so once warm and when revved...
manifold looked to smoke a little and smell... (one bolt missing from the down pipe atm)
coolant seemed to have a frothy white head still ran at a normal temp though...
also - very crude but i put my hand behind the exhaust and it left condesation on my hand not oil!
not looking good!
