on the flat top bit that is under the thermostat housing!

cheers pete iv got a cheap box to temporarily replace my ATV  witch iv smashed casing on opps and was wundering
witch 1 i had got turns out its a CEG iv purchased

CEG is the same ratios as an 8P which is the common 5 speed CL box found on mk2 and 3 polos.  CEG generally came on later mk3 polos.  It's probably about the closest you can get to G40 ratios.

cheers for that hayesey only gona run with the CEG for a few month till iv got hold ov anuva 5 speed to fit my atv internals into but need g40 on road asap as its my daily may evan buy and fit a lsd into my atv when i change casings over in a few month

Doesn't the CEG have a longer driver's side output flange compared to the 8P and ATV though? So if replacing an ATV with CEG, the shorter CEG driver's side driveshaft will have to be used or the output flange swapped?

iv no idea but i got both dive shafts with the gearbox
