Hey fellas,
1st post here ..so be gentle!:P
Having recently bought a G40, and not knowing anyone else that owns one, I have an issue with it.
At maybe aroung 6000rpm, I start hearing some kind of a squeal, but it goes away as soon as revs drop. It most certainly doesnt sound like the G-Lader whine, as it sounds a lot more like a belt slipping. From what I could see, it seems the car is running twin belts.
I dunno if it is normal to hear this, if the belts are too loose, or if anything else is wrong. Other than that, from what I can tell. The car pulls away very nicely, especially having had a GT previously!
Cheers all!
PS.: Will try to record it somehow so that you get a better idea!
sounds like belt slip to me
Meaning the belt(s) is to loose, or meaning I have to buy new one(s) ?
yes, it might need tightening, or new belts. if its a smaller pulley they can do it with new/tight belts. Sticky belt dressing helps too
It could just be too loose so try tightening them up or it could be the belts are old and not gripping aswell. I used to use belt dressing when I had vee belts too, you can get it from motor factors. This is the main reason people buy toothies though to eliminate belt slip as some people never get rid of the slip at high revs even with new tight belts and dressing on, especially with smaller pulleys.
I just bought the car in 2nd hand... and from what I know about it .. it was to an older guy.. like in his 50s.. and judging by the car itself .. it has the std pulley.
But I will inspect further onto the quality of the belts themselves, and to the tightening. they are toothed, twin belts.. I wasnt hoping to have belt slipping .. but oh well... its just after 6000 revs..
But thanks guys!
the twin belts are just the standard v-belts, they have little cut outs in them to allow them to bend properly, they're not really teeth and don't mesh with anything, the pullies are smooth.
I just left my car at the mechanic early today, and I checked that myself.. They are just like you say.. cut out only to allow proper bending around the pulleys, which are smooth .. but they are not that tight.. waiting to see what my mechanic will do.
yeah they'll probably just tighten them, the adjustment comes by moving the actual charger. Or if they need replacing I don't think they are expensive from VW.
I already noticed the tightening system.. clever, but I think that in the future I will make my visit to VW parts :P
Do you recommend the original VW issued brand (whose name I can't remember), or another one.. like Gates?
optibelt is what vw use. Any other pattern part i've not been able to get slim enough - they are 8mm wide i think and normal v belts at 10mm narrowest usually. So go to vw
Will do! Thks a bunch! :D
