Title: Catalyst
Post by: Jezza-7 on February 01, 2010, 05:53:23 PM
Been asked and wondering does my car need a cat?

Its a 92 g and has the "catalyst" badge on the rear.

When it came back from its mot it said at the top,

Non-catalyst equipped vechile (metered check)

CO limit is 3.5%vol and my car was 0.67%vol
HC limit is 1200ppm and my car was 164ppm

So can i have the cat off as my levels are alot lower?
Or does it need one?

Cheers

Cat came in for cars registered from K reg (August 1st 1992). Anything before that has the non cat test they put yours through. It's all done by computer from DVLA so you car must comes up as non cat. My H reg G40 came under non cat and I fitted a genuine VW decat pipe (was about 70 quid when I got it IIRC). My K reg one (registered 8th August 1992) got the cat test so I left it on.

When they bought the cat test in there were a lot of old stock cars of various makes without cats that hadn't been sold. They allowed an exemption on the cat test for these; if the car was built more than 6 months before August 1st 1992 it avoided it. In theory most G40s come under this as they were mostly built early 1991 (including my K reg one). I'm not sure if you would get away with it though as the G40 was always capable of passing the cat test even before it became a requirement.

I bought the K reg G40 off Nick and my mot station ran it on a default non cat test ;)

Cheers for the info that is really helpfull. Mine is a k reg registered on the 02/09/92 so i should be ok, it was run under the no cat test afterall. I think as long as i keep the test result and take it along to the next mot, then if they say its got no cat i could argue that it doesnt need one? Or i coule keep it and put it on for mot's in the future.

Thanks

The MOT place I went to did the full cat test on it which it passed no problems. Quite useful as it meant it was running OK despite spending a couple of years without the charger.

Jezza,
your K reg car should strictly come under the cat test. I don't know why they didn't do it though (go back there next year!). As I said, in theory you can argue that your car was built in 1991 but it's up to you to provide the MOT tester with evidence of the cars age. (There is a list of chassis numbers against build dates on ETKA.) That would also cover you if you took the cat off and then got stopped in a roadside check.

My 1973 Triumph GT6 emissions come under 'no visible smoke' for the MOT!!!! And it's tax free as well.

Non cat emissions test is great, no fast idle test just tick over ;D

Yeah i guess it must come up on the register as the non cat. I might go to vw and ask them whatit should come under, or what they would test it as.
Cheers for the info though.

Well picked up my car again after re test of mot and when i asked about the cat test they said it comes under the non cat test cause of when it was bought. I think if i do take it off though i will use same gargae. Especially when it cost me £27.
