i thought id post a thread as to not ruin his for sale thread, but £3400???
http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3077.0.html
there is such a shift between prices for G40's at the minute, im not saying it is not a good one, but that is quite high? from the spec and condition i would put my car about the same level, apart from mine has had full respray and serviced charger, but mine will be up for sale soon and i would not even think of sticking it up for that much?
I often wonder where the prices people think up come from? how much they paid previous? how much they spent?
its alot of dollar!
personally cant see any problem with the price .... if people want to give them away for under 2k its their choice,
anything under 2k is very cheap in my opinion as broken/ written off one can go for as much as this?!
lol
yeah you said this in the last post it was mentioned in, people dont give them away for under £2000, they sell them at the current value structure, they dont sell for this much quite simply.
i completly disagree ;D .... The price structure on g40s is what the owners make it, if some dont want to thats up to them
this is probbably why some have gone on the scrapage scheme as whats the point in selling them?!
i've seen g40's that happily sell for less than 2k but, i think its up to owners of what supposedly is a rare car, if it was a base model etc then fair enough but it supposed to be top of the range etc etc
like ive said before i cannot see how someone will pay more for a gt? even seen one for 5k this week which for a gt i dont agree with but i dont go straight out and saw woh 5k? for a gt? ...
i completely disagree with what you have now said lol
the price structure is not what the owners make it, its what the people wanting to buy them make it!
its basics of selling a car, if it doesnt sell at the price you put it up for, you lower the price?
contrary to whatever personal feelings you have on "how much it is worth"
i can see why gts are pulling good money, as they are lower insurance, less running costs, insurance costs
but again the price of GT's has nothing to do with prices of G40's
Im mearly making a post to ask what everyone else thinks, we have seen what you think, so will see what everyone else has to say :D
I'm with Jake on this one as previously stated. If this was the last G for sale ( and it's going that way) it would be worth a hell of a lot more. The only thing that stops G's making better money is the fact that so few people know about them. To a great extent they're outside the usual market place for that reason.
Well I'm with Dan on this one.
G40's values are low simply because there is not the demand for them. Relatively few people actually want a G40. As much of a fan of the G40 as you are Jake, you are in the minority. Low demand means low values. Dan is right, people will only pay what they think its worth.
As many of you know, I'm an old Ford fan. Here it's a different world. Mk1/2 Escorts for instance are extremely expensive. There is a huge demand for them and people will pay silly amounts of money for them. A rotten car in need of total restoration will be circa £1000, more if it's a 2 door model. Anything decent, ie no rot and tidy paint/trim with good mechanical spec is nearer £4k. If it's an AVO/RS car it's double that!
If there ever comes a time when thousands of people want to buy a G40, their price will rise appreciably. Personally, I can't ever see this happening.
i'm with dan.
If this sells for £3k then they are worth £3k. the last few on ebay (which is quite a true measure of how much people are willing to pay) have gone around £1600. Which means the price of an average g40 is about that.
If we all advertise them at £3-4000, it just means that people will probably choose something better value.
I for one am looking at ibiza cupras, which are now £2500 starting price.
i'm with Dan too,
i only paid £1450 for mine, tho i have spent around £800 on it but i'm not the sort of person that would add that onto the value. if someone offered me £1450 (if i was willing to sell that is) then i would take it, i think its a very reasonable price for a 150k G40, even tho they are becoming more rare, the only people you tend to see mostly wanting a G40 is young 17 year olds on clubpolo forum wanting to get one in exchange for their GT.
i payed £3500 for mine, and i think its worth every penny ;D
I paid £1420 for mine and i love it and wouldn't have anything else, I got a good car for a very cheap price even though i have had a few problems already! :)
But i would of paid up2 £2500 for a G40, if people are willing to pay the price they will pay it!
I couldn't really care less what people are trying to sell their cars for. If it sells for £3k then it's worth it, it probably wont sell for that but it doesn't mean it's somehow wrong for the owner to try.
Never ever going to make on the car what you have spent on it anyway, always a loss regardless.
Forget general service and maintance costs and just talk about modifications, I have spent a good few thousand, and looking to buy subframe and LSD at some point which is another £1000 easily. However i bought mine for £2200, and i would be over the moon if i got £3000 for it. I think some people throw money at their car's and expect to get a return on that money so value the car at, what some would consider to be, a high price.
It is never about what you think it's worse it is what someone wants to pay for it. I mean how many people out there now out trawling the net with a spare 3k to buy a car and think yes G40 great car, good price. When they could get so much more for their 3k with similar power that actually goes round corners.
Still He can price his car at what ever he wants, if he gets that much then well done.
I think you'd have to be rather daft not to start high and work your way down slowly. That's what dealers do anyway.

Yep agreed, the price you put it up for is hardly the price you expect or you would be a fool. People always barter you down.
disagree to a certain extent.
The cars i've ever sold I have priced reasonably and sold to the first person for the asking price or near enough (£50 off etc)
Everyone is different Pete, I prefer to put it a little higher than i actually want just to play the game a little, however sometimes i just go for a "ovno" which in my mind is to the nearest £50-100 of what i put the car up for.
i think the hard thing is is what to actually put your G40 up for??? Some people want a standard one and will pay more for it, most pay more for low miles. Some people will pay higher for more BHP and mods. Do you value it purely on how aesthetically pleasing it is? so many factors to consider here!
I guess the question here in repsonse to your last thread Pete, what do you consider resonable for a G40, infact not just yourself but as a G40 club what do we think is resonable??
does it really matter what people sell their cars for? i can't see why people are moaning about the price someone wants for their car especially if you are not wanting to buy it, if someone wants to put a high price on their car then its their choice.
if i were to sell my car the price i put on it is up to me and if anyone moaned about it then i would tell them to shove it.
Interesting read this. I am on both sides of the fence on this one actually.
The way i see it, the fact that G40's have always been rare and becoming rarer still should surely be valued to those who own them, know about them and those who want to buy one!
I can agree on the fact that for £3k you can get more car for your money these days but then again its a buyers market in the car trade!
The way i see it, the prices of G40's are basically bottoming out. The tatty examples are getting thrown from pillar to post (for pence) till they are finally scapped etc, however the better kept examples that are treated well and are going to last for years and years to come are going to start to go up in value!!
dont get me wrong i was not complaining, more just seeing how people think up a price for their cars!
i would never get back the money ive put into mine :o :o ;D
and another lol

i will be interested to see how they do, i hope they can fetch that!
i sold that for £2500 and its had paint and wheels refurbed since then as well as mucho cleaning and polishing so worth it in my opinion
that's one of the cleanest g40s you'll see so I dont see why it's not worth £3k of anyones money!
When Dan put this thread up I thought it might have created a deluge of replies. In fact it's only had about a dozen interested parties, which makes me think that a lot of G owners don't give a shit. Maybe that says it all about what your G's worth. For a few the G's struck a chord and that puts it up in value for us, but for most it's a cheap way to a quick car, nowt else.
I paid £2400 for mine 3 months ago.
I've seen one on pistonheads for £6000 -now that is just mad!
however, I think you'd be lucky to find a decent one for under £2000.
The value of G40s have risen massively recently! Last year when buying a 6n 16v I could of picked up a G40 for a similar price (£1300).
When buying my G40 I was struggling to find one anywhere near that price (in all fairness I didn't look for long) but even now I haven't seen any close to that.
