Title: forged pistons opinions
Post by: dub-disaster on September 17, 2009, 12:13:05 AM
hi there just a quick question ,
is it possibe to run around 170-180 bhp with a 40mm ladder?? and secondly is it possible to run that sorta power without forged pistons? i know it may run the risk of melting the pistons wich if happens i will have to replace the black and pistons ??
I think that if i wanted to run forged pistons i would have to go to the larger bore?
All help appreciated thanks very much :)

you can get forged pistons in normal bore, but they are the same price as bigger ones i think. So for the £100 extra reboring, it probably worth the extra price.

Melting a piston is a bit of an unknown - can be injector, fuel pumps, wiring, poor chip fueling, or even piston metallurgy.  Sometimes they go and noone knows why!  But normally the block can be saved by overboring

is it possible to get 170-180 with standard bottom end and a g40 g-lader though.  If you get the fuelling right then you shouldn't melt a piston, but you absolutely must replace things like fuel pumps, get your injectors cleaned etc...

At 180bhp on a standard engine thats a 60% power increase over standard. If you are serious about getting that sort of power from a G (reliably) then i would say you need to be willing to dig deep into them pockets!! Forged pistons would be best IMO. As to whether 180bhp could be achieved on a 40mm lader - you guys can fight that on out  :D!

well it can and has been done before.  194bhp is the highest I'm aware anyone getting a on the original g40 lader (although it was on stealth's rollers... still got to be 180 though).

On a standard 1272cc py block? Must have had some serious work to achieve that sort of run!

Maybe Stealth's rollers are a bit optimistic

LOL

Paul- Barneys was 1341cc BVH etc...

For a cast piston EGT control is key, powerwise you're looking at 45bhp per piston, which is by no means beyond the realms of man, at work the V8 runs 66bhp/piston, and they're cast items.

I know it was, I was saying that power is possible with the g40 g-lader.  Rest of the engine was far from standard.

Also Karl said it actually made 192-194 on aldons rollers too.
