Title: Crank main bearings prices
Post by: Richg40 on September 01, 2009, 09:05:27 PM
I was pricing up the main bearings for my rebuild today but my parts man isn't too sure on the price, probably because he's never ordered any before. On the EPC the bearings are described as a 'set' but he wasnt sure if this meant a set of 2 halves or a complete set. The price per 'set' is something like 40 quid? Any ideas?

A full set of genuine VW are circa £140. You can get uprated bearing sets for less!

A set should mean a full set, as in 5 bearings. I have never known bearings come individually especially the mains.

£40 sounds about right for the full set. A little on the pricey side for aftermarket ones if you ask me.

Just out of curiosity does anyone have the VW p/n to hand?

so what's the conclusion then? Is one complete bearing a set or is 5 bearings a set? And what are these uprated bearings?

the other thing is that genuine big end bearings are cheap as chips, that's why I cant imagine that the crank bearings are 36 quid for 1 bearing.

You buy them as a single pair (set) from VW, so you need five pairs which works out expensive. I can get you a full set of Glyco main bearings (which are the brand fitted from factory) for about £50.

Yes, it's funny that genuine big end bearings are cheap and the main ones aren't.

Just from a local engine machine shop place. Yeah, they are good and OE quality. Try your local engine machine shop / reconditioners for Glyco or KS Mains. If you have no joy, I might be able to get you a set.
