Title: Wheel cleaners..
Post by: supercharged spaniel on August 18, 2009, 01:27:36 AM
Just a note to say...I usually buy cheap wheel cleaner from the supermarket but after deciding it's proper shite I bought some wonder wheels stuff for around double the price. Still from the supermarket, about 6 quid and using it on my very awkward standard bbs rm's I am amazingly impressed! Comes in a box with a small pastry brush thing and a little pot you pour a bit in the pot and brush it on. And literally like you see in these non believable ads you rinse off! No I'm not sponsored by them but if you, like me hate cleaning awkward wheels..this is the shizzzz!!!

I was wondering what ppl cleaned those annoying standard BBS wheels with - they drive me mad!!

Yeh Wonder Wheels is good.  My Dad is quite sad and transferred it into a spray bottle - more user friendly :)

Pressure washing is also the way forward if your wheels are in good nick.

Presure washing is good but does nothing on it's own. You need to use a wheel cleaner I've found.

1.  your wheels are ra's
2. if you repeatedly use wonder wheels you will be looking at white wheels as it will eat the paint off!!!!

I would recommend the following

1. Use bilberry wheel cleaner (from elite car care) not very abrasive but gets shit off.
2. Buy some wheel sealant (jet seal or poorboys world) - apply between 1 and three coats to the wheels.
3. wash regularly with a hose and tooth brush.  With the wheel sealant it won't stick and therefore you'll not really need to use wonder wheels or anything with loads of acid in it.

2 things i don't like are t-cut and acid wheel cleaner!

God I used to hate cleaning RAs!!  I used to wish that 3-spokes would come back into fashion.

I used to use wonder wheels on them.

That's useful - thanks.  I'm just about to get mine re-furbed and can follow those instructions :)

not a problem - worked well after mine were refurbed.
The wheel sealant is also recommended for polished rims

Out of interest - what can you clean the silver bit on ATS classics with?  It's not exactly polished but mine always have black spots on them. grrr

also how do you apply the poorboys sealant? Is it tricky if it's not a spray and you've got BBS rims?

Thanks :)

yeah its an ar5e, you have to polish them with it... even worse if you were to apply 3 times!

Im hoping that the sealant does as it says by not allowing the brake dust to take a bite so a quick rub down gets rid of the majority of the dirt rather than having to proper beast them with acid cleaner every few weeks.

yeah it does, wash and quick brush with a toothbrush did me well for over a year.

I would avoid acidic wheel cleaners as Pete said they eat the laquer. I have found Autosmart Smart wheels to be a very good wheel cleaners. It dilutes down and still cleans amazing. I would recommend it to anone. Get one of those wheel bushes that look like a basting brush used in cooking, good for multispokes.

Anyone found a spray sealant which they like?! Not that I'm lazy  ;)

What about using acid wheel cleaner on powdercoated wheels? How will it affect the coat, if at all...?

depends on the coat, and the cleaner...  its not really recommended.  When i got some powder coated, they said use soap and water, anything else voids their 12 month waranty

Most wheel refurbing places still laquer powdercoated wheels (unless you have a satin or matt finish). I would still avoid acidic wheel cleaners.
