Title: Quaife Crown Wheel Nuts and Bolts?
Post by: jez1272gt on June 22, 2009, 06:44:48 PM
Hi all,

Having an empty garage for the minute with the car gone for its cage i have decided its time to start on the gearbox. I have stripped it down partially, and removed the diff and crown wheel.

I have got a Quaife ATB to go in and am wondering what nuts and bolts people have used to fit the crown wheels? There never seemed to be a direct answer on the group buy thread over on Clubpolo?

Thanks

Jez

Best to re-use the old nuts and bolts if you can (providing you have a ATV or CEK). They are grade 12.9 (highest strength) and special order fasteners if not got from VAG, who are still stupidly expensive even with their bulk buying power.

So you recon its safe to re-use the original ones? What torque setting is recommended? Just standard i guess?

I don't see it a problem if you use a decent thread lock fluid. They are fine threaded so should be pretty sound. The nuts are cerated on the base too, which bites into the steel plate washers when tightened.

Well i cant see a reason not to re-use them really! I have knocked them out of the original diff and they all look in good condition. Only problem i can see is pushing them into the Quaife unit as the diff is hardened to some stupid level! I assume its a case of using the standard washer/tensioner strap things and torqueing them up to standard figures!
