Title: Oil Cooler Question
Post by: jez1272gt on May 19, 2009, 06:43:33 PM
hello there,

I am looking at ordering in or aquiring a Mocal Oil cooler kit for my G. I want to use a Termostated take off sandwich plate.

My question is to those of you with them, if running a K03 turbo conversion with Roth manifold and PSD/G-Werks 63mm downpipe, will the oil filter clear the downpipe with the oil cooler thermo take off plate in situ?

Also just out of interest has anyone any track experience with the 16 row (115mm) version that psd used to recommend, ie is it up to it or maybe a little small?

Thanks

Jez

yeah it's no where near the downpipe really.  The oil drain from the turbo is pretty close depending on what the one you've got is like but it's not a problem on my car.

My oil cooler was fine on track days, not done any with the turbo yet though.  I think the coolant temp is going to be the issue rather than oil temp though.

Thanks haysey,

I was just dragging my lazy arse back to this thread to say that ive actually used my tiny, lazy brain to find some pics on here and find out the answer for myself  ;D - muppet!

The oil filter has loads of room really, not a worry!

I would have expected the cooler to be ok but i dont want to order it, fit it then find out once im running it that it could do with being larger. Might go one size larger depending on where i can find to locate it!..

Thanks again

Jez

Jez,
Mocal has 115mm and 235mm oil coolers...
Before buying a mocal kit take a look at detrab kits...
It has 210mm and 330mm coolers...
If you use a thermostat adaptor i suggest you to go for a large oil cooler (ex 16 row 235), so when you push your engine simply the thermostat opens and cools the oil faster than the small cooler...

Alex, I think you may find that the core sizes are 115 or 235mm long, whether Mocal or Setrab. The 210 and 330mm measurements are typical overall lengths of the oil cooler including the fixing points.

The most common size of oil cooler is the 13 row 235mm long one. If you go to a 115mm long (narrow) cooler you'll need a 19 row one to keep the capacity the same. Either of the above will be fine, but always use a thermostatic take off.
Bigger coolers can be fitted, but you need to fit them where they can get plenty of airflow - not easy on a small car like the Polo.

Oh yes, you're right, my mistake about the dimentions!
You say that the biggest cooler that you can use is the 235mm- 13 row cause of the lack of space?

I think im going to get a Mocal one as i can then order a take off thermo plate and unions all in one go. There are quite a few companies that supply them just finding the cheapest decent place really..

The UK supplier is Think Automotive (thinkauto.com) - probably a good place to start.

Think do Setrab ones too which is what I have.

I just bought the cooler, inlet & outlet fittings and thermostat take off plate.  Then found where best to put it on my car and made some brackets.  Then went to a local hydraulic pipe place in Rochdale and got them to swage up some pipes with screw on fittings at either end, cost about £20.  Some of the kits I've seen for sale just have push on pipes which are pretty shit really.  However this method does require some ability to be able to make things fit and think for yourself rather than just following some instructions  ;D your mileage may vary...

lol yeah my ability is up there but my lazyness holds me back! Seriously though I was planning to do just as you mention. I will get the actual rad, thermostat plate and unions for the cooler and then get a hydraulic place to make me up the pipes with the unions. I dont want to be restricted to location by the pipes supplied in a kit!

yes because the best place to fit the cooler isn't going to be the same on everyone's g40, it depends what else you;ve got.  I've got mine behind the passenger side foglight hole since there is no light in there.  It gets good airflow there.

Think sent really long pipes with mine:

But it fitted really neatly once we'd routed them around the front of the car

Alex's oil cooler looks to be a 13 row/235mm one.
Steve, if your oil cooler core is a 100mm high then it'll be a 13 row one too. 10 row ones are about 75mm high.

Buying a complete oil cooler kit is expensive, and often the hose lengths are somewhat "universal".
You can fit the thermostatic sandwich plate from any late Vauxhall XE or Ecotec powered Cavalier/Astra/Calibra/Vectra. Plentiful at the breakers and cheap too. The common 235mm 13 row oil coolers can be found cheap on ebay too.

There are 2 standard matrix lengths available, 115mm or the more usual 235mm. Overall lengths are 210mm and 330mm respectively.
