Title: spacer with toothies
Post by: dannyb.G40 on May 07, 2009, 12:07:00 PM
my new toothies arrived on wednesday  ;D so naturally they will be going on friday night as soon as a finish work. They came with a thin spacer, my question is where does this spacer go?

Also how do you get the pulleys off the charger and altenator, do the whole units have to come out? how do you stop them spinning when you undo the bolts?

Cheers, Danny

you need to hold the pullies still with a chain whip or similar to undo the bolts and then tighten up the bolts with the new pullies on.

No idea what the spacer is for, my toothed pullies (which were PSD ones) never had a spacer with them.  I'd guess it goes behind one of the pullies to make them line up properly, you'd be better off asking whoever you bought them from.

wreckon youve got the same ones as me spacer on mine was tied to charger pulley and thats where it was need and used, had to do some work with the alternator pulley to get it to line up and fit took about 3mm off the rear of the pullley and put the groove in it to slot on the shaft as i didnt come with one , just hope you dont have to do this !!

Thanks for the replies.

Jake I reckon it probably is the same kit, im sure i pm'd u over on club polo about it!

I have no access to the kind of tools required to do that if it comes to it, which i bet it does. When you say fit, do you me to actually physically get it between the engine and the chassis leg? cos its pretty tight down there.

Im in the process of fitting them and im stuck! The toothed crank pulley will not fit over the crank bolt past the chassis.

I have removed the charger engine mount and dropped the engine as far as it will go and i still can't get it on. Has anyone else had this problem when fitting toothies?

Any advice is much appreciated as the car is in bits at the minute lol!

Im just thinking out loud, if i undid all three engine mounts would there be anything to stop me moving the engine say 2 cm to the passenger side? Removing the boost pipe obviously to prevent the radiator from moving?

I only have one trolley jack at my disposal.

*edit* with a block of wood is it safe to support the engine on the sump?
