Finally got my G40 back on the road today after melting a piston 6 months ago!
It drives ok but say if im in 3rd gear i can increase my speed slowly by putting my foot down gradually but if i put my foot down a bit harder it will just rev. It does this in all the gears, its still drivable but hasnt got any decent acceleration. Any ideas?
Since the last engine i have replaced quite a few things.
1341cc Bottom End with forged pistons standard compression ratio.
Standard head and standard cam been skimmed and recut valves.
51mm Throttle Body
Paddle Clutch
Green Injectors
Full Blend Charger with 65mm pulley
Stand alone oil feed.
Brand new idle control valve.
new clutch release bearing
lightened flywheel
Sounds like the clutch is slipping - is the clutch cable adjusted correctly?
It could need adjusting, how do you adjust it? Is it where it connects to the gear box on that lever?
Yep, there should be two nuts on the end of the cable locked off against one another. Wind them off a bit and try the car again. Is the clutch biting point on the pedal very near the top of the pedal travel?
Yea the biting point is high, just had a look and I found the bolts, ill try it tomorrow
Should only take a couple of mins to adjust with 2 10mm spanners. :)
I've had to do it at the side of the road before when my clutch cable snapped. Fortunately I happened to have a spare cable in the boot, lol.
yes I agree with andy sounds like clutch slipping.
you could of put the clutch plate in the rong way round depending on what paddle clutch you used.
It's a cg paddle clutch. My cable hasn't got the 2 bolts on it, the biting point is in the middle of the pedal.
I'#d swap the cable for a manual adjusting one first then, the auto ones are crap.
Did you give the clutch a good clean with brake/clutch cleaner before installing it? If not then it's probably still got a coating of grease on it. you might get away with putting your foot down, letting it slip and burn off the grease or you might have to take the box off and clean the clutch.
I've ordered an adjustable clutch cable, so I'll try that first. Can't remember whether I cleaned it not, but I would have thought so as I wouldn't have left grease on it, and I was going mad with the brake cleaner on most things. Do you think I could spray some clutch cleaner through the top, I just don't want to take the gearbox off again!
you could try it I suppose. I still reckon you'll have to burn some off the clutch plate.
I did this when a gearbox I had on my g40 leaked gearbox oil all over my nice helix paddle clutch.
I just found a quiet motorway, floored it in 5th and let it slip for a while to burn the oil off. It did the job, I did a track day not long after that and it didn't slip once.
I'd rather it be oil than grease, I'll get some cleaner on it see if it does the job. Do you know if you can put a cg clutch in the wrong way round?
Seems like a sin to give it beans in my freshly rebuilt engine and charger!
I've never seen a CG clutch so can't be sure but my helix paddle wont go together the wrong way round.

Personally, I've never heard of a clutch plate that can be installed either way round. I too reckon it's an adjustment or oil contamination issue.
my bet would be the protective oil/grease they put on the pressure plate to stop it going rusty
Yea ive had loads of problems and once ive sorted one another one turns up,
The alternator doesnt seem to be charging the battry now, so im gonna replace the bushes and i got to get a big fat earth cable because where ive painted alot of things the engines not earthing properly!
It probably is oil or grease, the clutch does work and you can pull off rather quickly but as the revs build past 3-4000 in 3rd it starts to slip then. Im getting an adjustable clutch cable tomorrow so that might make a diffrence otherwise it will be just another part ive replaced and cant go wrong for a while!
yea you can put it together the wrong way round.
it just seems strange that it works to a certain extent even if it is the wrong way round.
gonna drive it for a week or so and hopefully it should stop slipping otherwise im taking the gearbox off again,
my problem now is it stalls occasionally sometimes it doesnt, it idles at about 900 and sometimes when im coming to a stop and go into neutral it will drop below 900 and stall. any ideas? ive got a 51mm de wedged throttle body on it and a brand new idle control valve.
I once had gearbox oil tipped all over mine (standard clutch)because someone mistook the plug at the top for somewhere to put it... Soaked the clutch, it slipped badlly for about 10 mins and absolutely OK there after... My clutch cable is set so it's about 1/4 inch off the "touching the bearing point", and I've added a spring to hold it off for the bearing's sake, it'll outlast the clutch anyway.
Are you sure it's not the wheels spinning, specially possible with foot down in 3rd on wet road! :-P
I recon, as a longshot, might be worth check that the crank doesn't move in and out, check at the pulley end, Just in case
the centre thrust bearing dissapeared. V unlikely, but worth 2 second check...
