Title: Suspension and Bushes overhaul
Post by: Robin on February 07, 2009, 08:27:02 pm
I am going to renew all the bushes on the G but would like to know how hard it is before i start ripping things off as i rather pay a garage to do it if its a right arse.

I have got some Genuine VW top mounts for the front and rear suspension - rears are a piece of piss but the fronts are harder as you need a ball joint splitter etc, is it worth doing myself or paying a garage to do the front?

Also i want to change the rear axle bushes, how hard is it to remove the rear beam and to get the bushes out? will be replacing them with some powerflex ones as they come in 2 halves so no need to push the fuckers in.

rears are simple once axle off = bash out, bash in. you could prob do it just undoing the pivot bolts and lowering down. i replaced vag with vag

as for front suspension, once you done it once, its not bad at all...

so the rear axle bushes do they need to be pressed in or can they be 'pressed' in using a hammer?

they aren't all that tight a fit so can easily be done with a hammer.  I replaced mine with nylon ones a while ago.

not really sure what you mean by "harsh", I don't have any problems with mine.  Does give less compliance in the back end though so less warning that the rear is about to step out.

just tried to fit my nylon badboys, no chance in hell they were going to go in!

i'll order some genuine VW ones, changed all the rear bushes but found that one of the rear dampers is uber leaking and on the other one the piston thread is starting to become stripped so it looks like the next item on the shopping list is 2 new dampers, might change all 4 to make life easier.

Looking for shocks; I've got a set of AVO's top adjustable fronts about 250 miles. Rears I can't be sure about but probably no more than 5k. Again one of the rears has some thread damage but can be re-worked OK. These have standard length rods which will leave things a bit floppy if you're going lower as although the packaging said G40, they're probably for any mk3.

Tried lube and a massive hammer, they aren't going in for sure.

I getting some OEM rubber ones instead!

As for shocks i am going to get a new Weitec 60mm set up to replace the current spax PSX kit.

How much were the top mounts and rear axle bushes from VAG Robin?

You've inspired me to to follow suit!

Rear ones are around 10 each, fronts are £25 each.

I have ordered pretty much EVERY bush so hopefully the car will feel better to drive once the new suspension is on as well

just finished fitting the following:

New Spax PSX 60mm Suspenion
New Front Top Mounts
New Rear Axle Bushes
New Rear Top Mounts

Car feels completely different, the steering is soooooooooooo light now, feels odd actually!

Problem now is that whilst adjusting the damping on the rear i noticed a fuel leak! ARSE

Good time to fit the brand new fuel pump and filter i got sat in the garage!
