I've sorted myself out with a Quaife ATB diff today, which I'm very happy about! :)
One thing worries me though, I'm still running GT driveshafts.
Have I just bought myself a one way ticket to a snapped driveshaft?
I have to check ETKA but I think GT shaft are same as normal polos.
More importantly the inner CVs are the same. My G chewed through one of these in about 20 seconds [no exaggeration]
That may be more the nature of my clutch so you may be ok.
Go G40 since the box is coming off
have been running LSDs and driveshafts from a non-g40 for years and never snapped one. Where they tend to fail is the same on a g40 shaft and non-g40 shaft anyway which is just before the spline part on the outer end.
I think I'll try it, fuck it, if I break a driveshaft I'll be as out of pocket as I would be from changing it on spec.
Is anyone making them any more though?
Oh yeah, and what's a standard clutch good for power wise?
i have had mine uprated pick it up next onth ill take photos for you all,
standard clutch should take about 160 bhp.
a clutch would be rated more by torque than bhp. I remember Paul Borthwick used to get on just fine with 170bhp on a standard clutch. Just an uprated one will last longer.
Something else to look into then!
Sorry, I didn't explain that, I reckon after a cam, headwork and a rolling road remap (all coming up) it'll be around 160bhp. Probably a bit under.
yeah I'd probably be happier using something along the lines of a helix organic clutch at that point.
I had a feeling you were going to say that! Not a massive problem, worth it in the long run too.

You must be lucky (or drive like a granny) then, I thought the record with a plate diff was 2 weeks for the stock shafts :P
I don't drive it like a granny at all, I guess I've just been lucky. I've ruined a couple of ATVs and snapped a gemini diff in half but driveshafts have been fine.
did all the cup cars have uprated driveshafts then? I thought they were all standard

I phoned up Helix asking them what torque their organic clutched would take. He said something like 25% over standard, then asked me what torque I was thinking of running through it. I said between 150-160 lb/ft and he said that would be fine !
Only trouble is they are a few quid !

yes actually, I had a mk3 diesel shaft on mine at the trackday in that picture above. Even though the car is only lowered 60mm the shaft caught on the edge of the sump and even the block, noticed this when I took the engine out recently:

if you can make that picture out, the shiney bits are where the thicker diesel shaft wore the actual engine block!!! Although I'm thinking this wont be a problem with some stiffer suspension. I can only guess it happened during hard cornering on the track day when I was suffering quite a bit of front end roll as can be seen in that picture. The nice stiff coilovers I'm putting on should help that out.
The shorter shaft on a diesel polo is no different from a normal one.
Additionally, the point where the shafts usually break is where the spline end section finishes and on the diesel driveshaft this is no thicker than a normal polo shaft anyway so I think it's debatable if those shafts are actually any stronger.
I only put this diesel one on just before the track day as I got them for next to nothing off a friend who used to have a g40 (Mike King, some people on here will remember him). For years before that I had normal non-g40 shafts with a gemini diff and then my gripper diff and never managed to break a shaft, although I know others certainly have, I guess I've been lucky.
yea i noticed the split bit was the same.
i have broke 3 2 on the join split bit and one on a inner cv joint prob alot to do with the roads where i live though!

I didn't think they did organic ones. Only thought they did uprated with standard material and paddle clutches.

yea from a standard one no stupid split in it now and its loads thicker.

on the topic of uprated driveshafts im on the game of finding someone to do some. I dont even have a standard pair as i sold them to someone thinking i had another pair - what a lemon!!

It's only the driver side (long) driveshaft that is uprated though, the nearside short ones are just standard.
i seem to only have aproblem with the short ones :S ??
i ripped the inner side of the shaft where it was bolted to the box..

that's weird, is it the actual shaft that's breaking or the CV joint?

i haven't actually literally "snapped" a shaft , but always seem to crumble up the balbairns in the cv..
the one on it the now was fitted from a low milliage 1ltr and never had a problem yet ...
yeah I'd say that has more been down to CV joints being worn out than anything else (or not OEM quality ones).
