I spotted this polo in an East Anglia classic car auction on April 9th.
It is a pearl grey g40 standard form with 40ish k miles on the clock. Couple of owners with fresh mot. No mention of history etc and in my opinion needed some TLC and a good clean.
I am stunned it fetched £10'250. I've never seen a g40 brake through 5k let alone 10k
Who would make such an investment??
Be a few years before G's are changing hands for that sort of money surely?
Ben ????
I was trying to bid on it had rust on bottom of door and 5 dents

Did you see it in the flesh? Was it in good nick?
No got someone do a walk around over phone he said patch of rust on bottom drivers door same size as a parm and rust on front wing
Still can't fathom who would pay 10k.?
I saw this on carandclassic.co.uk and it looked a bit scruffy but the estimated price was 2.5-3.5k?? did the person actually pay £10,250?

I'm new to this site but was looking at this car to maybe purchase. Glad I never went now. 2 people got carried away I think!
Either that or they mistook it for a MK1 Golf gti! ;D
I was bidding on it, and the way it just few up in price (was on the telephone) and it reached £4.7k rather quickly when i pulled out.
Looking at its history its had various MOT failures on brake lines and warnings on shocks
Plus as stated it had rust on door and wing, a few dents and faded interior
someone is in for a hell of a shock when they realise it's actual value!
I'd want 4 g40s for that price :D
Must have been one hell of an auctioneer to pull in that price... Bet he pushed the whole "it's a future classic" "limited production" "next mk1 golf" etc
I'd love the new owner to turn up on the forum 8)
I read it was £10,500 it went for? Either way it is still a heck of a lot of money for a car that will only make £3k tops braking for spares and going by its condition maybe worth about the same or less as a whole car.
I'd imagine though it has either gone to a dealer or a collector. Whoever has it will be holding onto it for a LONG time if they expect to even get their money back on it.
Not that bad when you compare it to the LHD ones on mobile.de with comparable mileage
http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/search.html?isSearchRequest=true&scopeId=C&makeModelVariant1.makeId=25200&makeModelVariant1.modelId=27&makeModelVariant1.modelDescription=G40&minFirstRegistrationDate=1985-01-01&maxMileage=90000&minPowerAsArray=101&maxPowerAsArray=PS&minPowerAsArray=PS&damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED
Right now the G40 is probably worth more in parts in the UK, how long can that last?
Not too bad? The most expensive one on there is £6,550 when you convert it.
Even in parts they aren't worth 'that' much. Once you've sold the conversion, rose jointed TCAs, rose jointed steering arms and the rear beam. Most of the rest is just parts you can find on any other mk3 Polo or even other VWs like the mk1 or mk2 Golf.
did we ever find out who purchased this car?
