Title: Camshaft!! Which is best?
Post by: Merrick on September 29, 2014, 11:03:57 AM
Hi guys, I've been looking at camshafts for a while now and seem to just be getting more undecided. Mods I've done are as follows 65mm pulley, jabba sport chip to suit, r1 charger, air filter, de-cat, full Jetex exhaust, de-wedged throttle body and I think that's it engine wise.
Which is best schrick, Newman or piper? I Use the car everyday so don't want something that's too crazy but still want a decent gain. Hope you can help!!!!

If you're looking at the normal asymmetric G40 'sport' cam or equivalent in each range, there's not much to choose between them performance wise IMO. Piper do a lairy rally cam (BPE300H if memory serves) which gives a great performance gain if you don't have much regard for supercharger or valvetrain lifespan - or are willing to upgrade parts accordingly. I'd suggest it's really only for competition car use though!

In terms of quality/finish of the parts, Schrick are the best (and most expensive), Piper occupy the middle-ground with Newman being the cheapest. Newman parts are perfectly serviceable though, I have one on my own car.

Thanks for that!! I think I'm swaying towards newman or schrick, been reading that some people have had to grind down parts of there head to fit the piper cam in. I emailed bar-tek about there schrick 256/276 cam and they said I should gain around 25hp plus, personally I can't see that happening?

i run the schrick 252/276 one, i wouldnt say it was a 25bph increase. 12bhp maybe, if that?

I thought it was a bit over the top. How did yours tick over and did it change the day to day driveability much?

Mines fine with drivability. Tick over is fine and ive had it all mapped by ppp.

Great stuff!! I've already had r1 charger, 65mm pulley and chip to suit from jabba. Would I need to have to have a new map or would it be fine?

Do you have the spec of the chip?

It may be on the paperwork at home as it was done about 12 years ago?

Ideally a map would be better to get the best gains out of the mods you have.

I'd look at 250cc injectors, de wedge your throttle body and gt inlet manifold if you havent done already, then map it.

I had GT inlet, de wedged TB, piper cam, full blend supercharger (similar to R1 spec) and 65mm pulley with the PPP map. And I got 110BHP at the wheels.

G40 injectors are fine for this spec, only really needed for 160Bhp +

I've got a gt inlet on its way :-)
I've also been thinking of going down the ported head route?
I've rang jabba and they said they have a chip for this and that's only £90
What do you think?

If you had head work and a cam with what mods i said, i reckon you'd be around the 160bhp mark.

If you dont mind spending another £60 on top of £90 you can get it custom mapped for £150.

off the shelf chips arent bad, but every car is so different the only real way to go is a custom remap.

So in my opinion, choose your mods, do them all at once and at the same time get a custom remap. if you are driving it as a daily i wouldn't go too wild, too much power and it will become less of a daily and more of a feisty track car needing a subframe and some serious coin spent on it bringing everything else up

Also jezza who does remapping for £150 is it a proper custom job?

Thanks guys!! You've been a big help!! Who does a custom map for £150?
Jabba wanted £350 :-s

Yeah £350 sounds more common, £150 sounds like a reeeeeeet bargain

Anyone got a stainless manifold? What do you think, are they worth doing? Still got the standard one one with de-cat. Been looking at philj's and one on eBay for £200ish.

Not worth going for anything but PPP or PSD. Fit is bad and you won't be happy with it

Really? So you get what you pay for?

Speak to James @ dubforce. Down in the portsmouth area. Think ABTDAN went to get his mapped by him.
