Title: problem with distributor cap
Post by: Snave on June 10, 2014, 06:28:03 PM
Hi guys,

I've been replacing and upgrading slowly my G, last upgrage was magnecor 7mm ignition leads, beru ignition coilpack with module, ngk platinium plugs (or iridium I don't remember exactly). everything went fine till last weekend I was pulling a bit hard on 4th gear and it start to misfire / knock above 3k rpm, I've replaced intank pump, inline pump to new recently and I dn't think it's a fuel problems. I found out when removing the dizzy cover (find picture)
(http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae345/SnaveStudio_7/dizzy_zpsbd6aac6e.jpg) (http://s986.photobucket.com/user/SnaveStudio_7/media/dizzy_zpsbd6aac6e.jpg.html)

It came back to normal and stop knocking, just a little hesitation on full throttle I can feel some little knock but work fine. Today on my way back home I was going on 4th gear uphill and the car start to rattle.  I've stop and give a 10 min break before driving again, it work fine again but I didnt go over 4krpm again under full throttle it will do the same..I read around the forum about removing the rotor resistor http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9225.0
I bought a new dizzy cap today and replace it , still the same symtom going on. any ideas guys ?

I would like to know how to time it, for me its a bit sensible I don't give a try by random at least I get proper instructions. I don't know what they did at the garage with it. I don't have easy going to 6k rpm even  seems to need harder push to go there.

You will need a strobe light to set the ignition timing.

Any garage will be able to do it for you.

I think I'll get the test done soon.

timing check ok , rotor restrictor removal done. still some knock uphill but run good on flat, I will check the spark plug gap tomorrow to see it solves the whole mystery.

Is the insulation on the knock sensor ok?

How old is the coil?

I'll check the knock sensor isolation, knock sensor itself new from January, coil just 2 months ago.

you don't seem all that sure about what sparkplugs you've put in it, are you sure they're right?

Also, it's been known for people to have problems with those HT leads in the past.  Do you have your old standard VW ones to try?

Thanks for suggestions guys, I will check tomorrow about the plugs and know who really they are and check gap, if the problem persist I may give a try on old plugs wires. Will update soon.
