Should be a little paper sticker in the boot(yep paper) offside rear with the appropriate code.
VOSA and VW should be able to confirm as well.

I'd have thought the DVLA would have records of any such changes.

Not always, we've had re shells that have been unrecorded.
You'll only find out if the car was a write off and then put back on the road

VOSA ??? Black mark brain. Re-shells might explain the increase in G40 numbers in How Many Left.

Increase more likely imports etc.  A reshell from my recollection has to be a new shell otherwise it'll be a gt or something. .. or if was a g40 with different block it'll have changed engine no from original details.

You can get copies of the vw birth certificate from classic

well that would be a "ringer" which isn't going to be recorded as it's illegal.  If you reshell legitimately then it'll be recorded at the dvla but getting the "new" shell to be changed into a g40 isn't easy (possibly impossible in fact).  It works on a points based system and (last time I looked) requires authorisation from the original manufacturer.

Which engine code matches up to the shell?

The paper sticker I mentioned earlier sat inside the offside rear scuttle. It was applied after paintshop and I believe identified the shell's minor variations for trim levels etc. Holes for arch trims and wipers are a good example good example and would identify the shell as at least GT or G40. Paint codes should be in there too and the shell's eventual coding as per vin plate should be there as well. This came from my local VW dealer, but if anyone still has one of these stickers they might be able to verify.

Cheers. So the sticker exists and identifies the trim plus it has g40 stamped on it. The only windows that still match the plate are the rear quarters and the door quarters. Just wondering if there was a number on the engine that corresponded to all this?

the engine has a code and serial number on it which should match the v5.  It's stamped on the block above the gearbox, below the dizzy.  It's very hard to see with the engine in the car, you'll probably need to carefully clean the area.

The sticker will have py engine code on it.

All shells have holes for arch trim. Only thing g does have is is a square hole for the beesting. After market normally have a square hole
