Title: G40 engine rebuild advice and tips
Post by: Caskill on November 24, 2013, 03:44:27 PM
Just looking for general advice and answers to a couple of questions regarding rebuilding my G40 engine. it has melted piston 4 and scored the bore, I was just wondering how much of these mark can be removed with a hone? they seem pretty deep, maybe  0.1mm or so, and if they need machined out is it possible to retain the standard sized pistons?

The other question i have is where is the best place to buy parts such as the rings from? I've mainly worked on fiestas and normally use gsf or euro parts but i don't know what your opinion is on their polo parts or if there is somewhere else everyone here uses for parts. I'm 100+ miles from the nearest vw dealer so its not exactly an easy task to pop to the local garage. I've also read the head gasket thread and found it useful, just wondering if anyone has done a similar thread for other unavailable parts? Thanks in advance for any help or advice :)

You can sleave the bore... or rebore and use oversized pistons.

I can supply oil pump and chains if u look in petes dub stuff section.

Rings arent easy to come by but bartek and max rpm.can supply

Thanks Pete, are things like the shell bearings obsolete too?

Most engineering shops should be able to supply correct bearings.  I got mine from VW a couple of years ago so assume they still have them..

with the block, I'd either go 1341cc (pistons are about £475) or source a spare block that has in-tact bores.

Sounds interesting, has anyone got info on the best place to get the pistons and what bore size they require? Do they come with rings etc. also? Thanks for the help boys!

the pistons are 77mm.  You can get them from loads of places, including ebay.  But you're possibly best off asking PPP in their section on here.  THey are made by Wossner.  They come with rings yes.

I notice there is a block for sale at the moment in the For Sale section for £120 too so that'll be the cheapest option (although I'm not sure what it has with it).

We've got Wossner pistons listed - http://www.onlychargeddubs.co.uk/products/polo-g40-supercharged-wossner-forged-pistons.html

My engineers tend to not like going to biggest bore size but they will do it if asked, boring is £120 with re-balance at £185 which is highly recommended.
