Title: Gearbox swap
Post by: physicsfool on November 13, 2013, 12:44:22 PM
So swapping my Gt box for a recently serviced ATV box this weekend. Are there any seals or bearings that I should check/replace when I drop the box off?

Gearbox oil I will be getting from VW, so anything else I can order at the same time

Any tips? I will be popping the car up on axle stands and using a jack to keep the engine in place.

Cheers

Replace the driveshaft bolts as well.

I found is easier to put some of the gear oil into the box whilst it was on the ground, unless you got a long piece of clean hose to feed the oil into the hole with.

When was the clutch release bearing last done? Might be worth doing that whilst its off.

Would be worth changing the diff seals? £25 for two genuine ones dont take long :) saves leaks in the future and covering everything in oil

The seal is still available from vw but the bush is not. can order it from vw heritage but its a few weeks of waiting.

If the ATV box has been recently serviced surely these other bits wont need doing?

So everything within the box is good to go. Just had brears service it.

Where can I get a driveshaft bolts? And no idea when the clutch was done or what clutch it has on. Where can I get a clutch release bearing?

Clutch release bearing can be got from most dealers, I got one from ECP but GSF and VW. Just swapped the mrs polo's gearbox on monday after she blew the exsisting one up (its had 3 boxes now) . May aswell do the clutch too. I got a 1.3 clutch release bearing and 5 lts of gear oil for £60 from ECP!

cheers lad, so is the clutch release bearing a generic part for all 1.3 clutches? or will i have to check which clutch i have before purchase one? also is the gearbox oil just standard?

Standard is recommended but i use millers. If you cant get to TPS to get it, just get the equivalent stuff, castrol make, from halfords. About £10 a litre or less with trade.

I would just ask your local GSF/ECP as tom has done as they will all be the same.

Clutch might be worth doing as well then if you dont know what mileage its done.

I was thinking of doing the clutch, is it just the standard 1.3 one/valeo or LUK? I have a handful of mods but nothing lairy.

For any first timers doing this. Took about 8 hours, rounded a driveshaft bolt using the wrong head, a makeshift engine hoist can be fashioned from a piece of rope and a wooden bar.
And turns out the clutch and bearing were in good shape. So left them in. ATV box is a treat, very smooth and ratios are much better. Thesis may be no further on, but polo is doing well

Instead of a hoist i use a supermoto bike stand a had from when i had a motorbike, it is by far the most helpful tool i have ever used. uses a scissor mechanism and a handle with a 24mm ratchet to move it up and down, got a great big flat surface so is perfect for gearboxes. used it sooo many times on private jobs. dont know how much they are as mine was given to me, but well worth the investment :)

glad to hear its all done mate! must be lovely on the motorway now, and not eat those gears up so quick, can long them out :)

heres mine :) it scissors down completely flat which is ideal for storage and its not too heavy, yet really durable and its safe for 500kg :)

Good shout. I have one from my motocross days, but doesn't drop low enough. Good shout for next time though. Save my back and arms
